Worst Ashes Series for Australia is Over
Going into the Ashes series many punters saw England as favourites, but not too many would have predicted a 3-1 drubbing in which the Australians lost by more than an innings three times.
After the Perth test the Australian team had us thinking they were a chance to win the series but that all came crashing down after the disastrous innings on day one at the MCG when the team could only manage 98 runs.
Now the team will be viewed as perhaps the worst ever to compete in an Ashes series. How things have changed from four years ago when Australia completed a 5-0 clean sweep playing at home.
The Australian team has been on a slow downhill run towards this miserable series for the past year or so. Look back four years ago and we said farewell to two of the greats in Australia’s bowling history. The retirement of Shane Warne has been the toughest to cover. Finding a quality spinner has been tough. In all that time not one player has locked down the specialist spinner position.
The fall from the top has been spectacular in much the same way as the West Indies came crashing down from the summit of cricket all those years ago.
It Doesn’t Get Better Than This!
For England this is the ultimate victory. Coming to Australia and hammering the home team is about as good as it gets for a touring English team. For the players and the barmy army victory in Australia is oh so sweet.
England completed their 3-1 series victory with an innings and 83 run defeat of the once mighty Australian cricket team. That set off a huge on-field celebration and allowed the English press to start Aussie bashing.
Well done to the English team, one that thoroughly outplayed the home team.
Where to for the Australian team? Will a rebuilding process start, or will the current players start working hard and find some form? Interesting times ahead for Australian cricket followers.
