formula on drivers championship carsThe big news out of qualifying at the Australian Formula One GP was that Lewis Hamilton missed the top ten. Apart from that it was business as usual.

Sebastian Vettel let Mark Webber go out and set the fastest time and then he chased him down. The German who took pole in the opening GP backed it up with a scintillating performance on the Melbourne street circuit. He went into the 1 min 23 region for the first time on the Albert Park track to better Webber’s fast time.

Vettel clocked 1m 23.919s with Webber getting around in 1m 24.035s. The 1-2 on the grid is the first time both drivers line up side-by-side on the front of the grid.

Fernando Alonso was not far behind Webber with the third fastest time of 1m 24.111s, then half a second back was Jenson Button’s with 1m 24.675s for McLaren. Felipe Massa in his Ferrari grabbed fifth spot with 1m 24.837s.

Nico Rosberg once again outqualified his Mercedes teammate Michael Schumacher, with 1m 24.884s compared with 1m 24.927s from the seven time world champion. Rubens Barrichello put Williams eighth on the grid with 1m 25.217s ahead of Robert Kubica for Renault with 1m 25.372s. Force India’s Adrian Sutil rounded out the top ten with 1m 26.036s.

In Q2 Lewis Hamilton eased off in his first attempt to set a hot lap, then he headed to the pits. After he came out again he could not find the pace to break into the top ten.

Watching Vettel set the fastest time you would have thought he had no chance as he was untidy through quite a few times. He was obviously pushing the limits and delighted his team with the pole position.

Now we have the anxious wait to see how the advantage of a Red Bull 1-2 pans out. Can’t wait.
