Venus Bundled Out of Australian Open Tennis
The biggest upset this tennis season has come at the Australian Open tennis. In the night session at Melbourne Park the no. 6 seed Venus Williams faced Spain’s world no. 46 ranked Carla Suarez Navarro.
The match started well for Venus who is a seven time singles grand slam champion as she too the first set 6-2. From there little would have seen what was to come.
Watching Suarez Navarro for the first time I could see that she was a good athlete and has a pretty nice looking backhand. At times I was thinking she looks a bit like Justine Henin. The Spaniard did plenty of running as she chased down the Williams ground strokes.
In the second set Suarez Navarro signalled that she was going to go down without a fight and raced to a 4-1 lead. Williams got it back to 4-3 before being broken again to lose the set 6-3.
In the deciding set Venus, thanks to unforced errors from her opponent, went to a 5-2 lead. From there you would have got good odds on a Williams win. Suarez Navarro to her credit did not give in. She battled her way back thanks to errors coming from the Williams racquet and her own good play.
Before we all knew it Suarez Navarro had broken Williams twice and was serving for the match at 6-5. A few great forehands later and the match was hers. A great win for the Spaniard playing in just her fourth main draw of a grand slam singles.
Suarez Navarro made it to the quarterfinals at the 2008 French Open. In the third round at the Australian Open she will face fellow Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
In the other night match on Rod Laver Arena the number four seed Andy Murray won 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
