US Open Tennis – Del Potro Steals the Crown from Federer
The more you win the closer you are to losing. That is how it was for Roger Federer. His amazing win streak at the US Open has come to an end following a thrilling five set encounter with Juan Martin Del Potro. The big Argentine took the match 3-6, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2.
Federer was aiming for his record equaling sixth straight US Open tennis title. He also had a 6-0 head-to-head record against his opponent and had humbled Del Potro in the Australian Open quarterfinals winning 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. Federer had also defeated Del Potro at the French Open in the semis.
Yesterday Del Potro had handed Rafael Nadal his worst defeat in a grand slam tournament so you knew he was in good form.
Looking at the stats it was an even match. Federer hit 62 unforced errors to 60 from Del Potro and in the Winners column it was 56 for Federer and 57 for the ultimate winner. Probably what let Federer down in this match was his first serve. He only managed to get 50 per cent into play compared with 65 per cent for Del Potro.
Del Potro has been on the rise this year as has been seen with him making the quarters in the Australian Open, semis at the French and now he has gone on to be a grand slam winner. He weakness at this stage in his career is grass.
If Federer had won this title he could have surely laid claim to being the greatest of all time. Perhaps he deserves that title already. Federer was just two points from taking the title but after having missed his chance in the fourth set he faded in the fifth and the title was Del Potro’s.
