Tennis racquet and ballThe US Open tennis tournament for 2009 gets underway later today. I will be giving limited coverage to the overall tournament however I will cover everything Aussie.

This year we see 10 players in the main draw of the men’s and women’s singles tournament. The are lead by world no. 15 ranked female player Sam Stosur and world no.  32 Lleyton Hewitt who also was the champion way back in 2001.  78th ranked Peter Luczak  will be joining him along with wildcard recipient Chris Guccione and qualifier Carsten Ball. Luczak despite his ranking had to qualify and actually made it into the tournament as the highest ranked loser in the qualifying tournament.

Also in the women’s tournament will be world No.62 Jarmila Groth, Jelena Dokic, wildcard Olivia Rogowska and qualifiers Monique Adamczak and Anastasia Rodionova. Dokic is making a return from a bout of mononucleosis and would not be expected to go far. She will be doing well if she can make the second round after having spent most of her time since Wimbledon in bed.

The matchups for the Australian tennis players in round one are as follows:

Round 1 – men’s

Thiago Alves (BRA) v [31] Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)

Juan Pablo Brzezicki (ARG) v [Q] Carsten Ball (AUS)

[LL] Peter Luczak (AUS) v [30] Viktor Troicki (SRB)

Pablo Cuevas (URU) v [WC] Chris Guccione (AUS)

Round 1

[1] Dinara Safina (RUS) v [WC] Olivia Rogowska (AUS)
