Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova both have advanced to the fourth round of the French Open.

Federer defeated Mario Ancic 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Sharapova after a tight first set creamed her opponent in the second to claim a 7-6(4), 6-0 victory.

It was not so easy for some other players. Ferrer, Gonzalez, Monfils and Ljubicic all had to fight off their opponents in five set epics.

No. 5 seeded Ferrer overcame former world no. 1 Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was a good effort from Hewitt considering the injury riddled few months he has endured going into Roland Garros.

On centre court Monfils thrilled the hometown fans with his five set win against Jurgen Melzer, 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Ivan Ljubicic eliminated the fourth seed, Nikolay Davydenko 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. It was a good effort from the big Croatian to come from 2 sets to zero down.

In another comeback from two sets to nil down it was Fernando Gonzalez who defeated Stanislas Wawrinka 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
