Tony Dungy steps down from Colts

January 13, 2009

The head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Tony Dungy, has decided to call it a day after 31 years in the NFL.

“Don’t shed any tears for me,” Dungy said after announcing his retirement. “I’ve gotten to live a dream that most people don’t get to live. What phase two will be, we’ll find out. But phase one has been awfully special.”

Dungy became the first African American coach to win a Super Bowl when he guided his Colts team to the title on February 4, 2007. On that day the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears.

Dungy was head coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001. He then was head coach of the Colts from 2002 to 2009.

He was not only a coach in the NFL, Dungy was a player with the Pittsburgh Steelers after signing as a free agent in 1977. He played in the 1978 Super Bowl team with Pittsburgh before being traded to San Francisco in 1979. His career ended in the training camp of the New York Giants in 1980.
