Tomic Advances to Wimbledon Quarter-finals
Australia’s Bernard Tomic has defeated Xavier Malisse 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
It is his best grand slam result in his young career. Earlier this year he reached the third round on the Australian Open before losing to Rafael Nadal.
Tomic will meet the winner of the Novak Djokovic v Michael Llodra fourth round match. Djokovic is sometimes a hitting partner for Tomic and won the Australian Open earlier this year.
Having gone through qualifying to reach the main draw at Wimbledon Tomic is only the fifth qualifier to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon during the Open era.
The match was played on a hot London Monday before a capacity crowd on court 18. With the win Tomic is set to rise to around 72 in the rankings which means he is the top ranked Australian men’s player.
The young Australian had just 8 unforced errors for the match compared to 21 from Malisse. The winners were 37 to 28 in favour of Tomic.
