The secret of the Beijing ring roads solved

Here is a photo of the Olympic priority lane on Beijing’s second ring road.

My daughter who has been with me in Beijing for the past week has been hearing about the second ring road or the third ring road as people talk about travel around the city.

The other day she saw the Olympic rings painted on the road as we travelled in a taxi. She asked what are they on the road for? I said it is to show the Olympic transport lane. That was all she said at the time.

A day later she came to me and said she now knows why everyone calls the roads known as ring roads just that “ring roads”. She said it is because they have “rings on them”.

It was so funny to hear her explanation of things here in Beijing.
