The Olympic Flame Arrives in Canberra

April 23, 2008

Olympic torch relay banner in CanberraToday at just before 8.00am the Olympic flame touched down in Canberra, Australia.

Tonight there was a function held at Australia’s Parliament House to welcome the flame to Canberra. The function was hosted by the Chinese Embassy. I was lucky enough to be invited.

Many of the Australian Olympic swim team were on hand as well as greats from days gone by. Ian Thorpe, Rob De Castella, Petria Thomas to name a few were in attendance.

It now remains to be seen just what will happen tomorrow as the torch makes its way around the streets of Canberra. The torch relay will commence at 8.45am and will wind up around lunchtime.

Tania Major has the honour of being the first torchbearer for the Canberra leg. Ian Thorpe will be the last torchbearer to carry the torch. He will also light the cauldron at Commonwealth Park before the farewell concert.
