Stosur and Groth Advance to Round 4 at French Open
On Saturday in Paris no matter what happened at the French Open Australia was going to have a female player in the fourth round. This was due to the fact that we had an all Aussie matchup between Jarmilla Groth and Anastasia Rodionova.
The winner in the end was wildcard entrant Groth. She won 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to advance to her first ever Grand Slam fourth round.
Groth had let two match points slip in the second set and had to come from a break down in the third to take the match.
The 107th ranked Groth now meets Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan who defeated Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
Sam Stosur also booked her fourth round spot by defeating Anastasia Pivovarova from Russia. Stosur won 6-3, 6-2 and now awaits the winner of the Maria Sharapova-Justine Henin match which was held over.
Henin and Sharapova are tied at a set apiece with the score 2-6, 6-3. Perhaps Henin was lucky to get the match sent to the next day as Sharapova was getting on top.
So Australia has two women in the fourth round of the French Open but no such luck on the men’s side. Lleyton Hewitt was the only male player to reach the third round and he lost yet again to Rafael Nadal. He went out in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
