Portugal at the last World Cup reached the final four, this time around they have been eliminated by Spain in the second round.

The match came alive for Spain after Fernando Torres was replaced by Fernando Llorente after 58 minutes. Not long after it almost became the perfect substitution. In the 60th minute a cross came in that he dived to head only to see it go straight at the keeper.

Not long after the Llorente effort David Villa went close to scoring. The pressure was mounting and and finally some Spanish brilliance saw the deadlock broken. Some beautiful passing which included a great back heel saw Villa take a shot from close range. His shot was blocked but he followed up to shoot high into the net at the 63rd minute.

After that it was Spain who continued to attack. The had several good efforts saved by the keeper.

Cristiano Ronaldo never got into the match for Portugal and in the end 1-0 was enough to see the European champions advance. The play Paraguay who defeated Japan in the first penalty shoot-out of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Spain must be feeling confident now. They have one of the easier quarter-final matchups and are looking at their first ever World Cup. The only worry is perhaps the form of Fernando Torres who still has not scored at the tournament.
