San Diego Chargers get first win of new NFL season
After going down by a point in last week’s game against the Denver Broncos the San Diego Chargers were keen to rack up their first win of the new season when they took on the Brett Favre lead New York Jets in Monday night football.
Despite going behind early in the game the Chargers have crushed the Jets to record a 48-29 win.
Philip Rivers after running just two plays in the match gave an intercept with 11.36 on the clock in the first quarter. The pass was intended for Antonio Gates, however no. 36 for New York, David Barrett intercepted and ran 25 yards for a touchdown.
On the next possession for the Chargers they kept the ball for over five minutes however had to settle for a field goal after they could not breach the defence of the Jets.
New York wasted their next possession fumbling to allow the Chargers to attack them once again. This time the Chargers made the most of it and a short pass from Rivers to Tolbert brought up a touchdown. That left the score at 10-7 to the Chargers after the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter Brett Favre was intercepted by Antonio Cromartie who then took the ball 52 yards for another touchdown.
It did not take long for the Jets to hit back as just three plays later they scored. This was thanks to a great kick return of 94 yards by Leon Washington. Favre combined with Laveranues Coles to setup another Jet’s touchdown from just 3 yards out. The extra point made it 17-14 to the Chargers.
That was the last time the Jets would score until 10 minutes 39 seconds were left on the clock in the fourth quarter. At the same time San Diego piled on the points through three touchdowns. Chambers, Gates and Tomlinson were the scorers.
The Jets made a late charge at the Chargers and scored two touchdowns in the last quarter however San Diego had done enough to earn their first victory of the season.
The Chargers are now two games behind the Denver Broncos who had another close win over the New Orleans Saints. This time the score was 34-32. The Broncos got their points in the first three quarters going to a 34-26 lead at the 2.24 mark in the third quarter. New Orleans could only score six points to close within two points.
In other NFL week three results the Dallas Cowboys stayed perfect with a 27-16 win over the Green Bay Packers. Last year’s super bowl champions the New York Giants are also off to a perfect 3-0 start following an overtime win against the winless Bengals.
After three weeks in the NFL there are now six teams that have not lost. Apart from Denver, New York Giants and the Cowboys, Baltimore, Buffalo and the Tennessee Titans are yet to lose. At the other end of the standings there are six teams without a win. They are Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams.
In week four either Cleveland or Cincinnati will have a win as they face each other.
