Precious Forlan Away Goal Send Atletico To Hamburg
Liverpool won the match 2-1 however an away goal has sent Atletico de Madrid through to the Europa Super League final in Hamburg. They will face Fulham who came from behind to defeat Hamburg 2-1.
Liverpool can look back and rue the disallowed goal to Yossi Benayoun in the first leg. That was a huge call as it was an away goal for Atletico that made all the difference. Replays showed the goal should have been allowed
On Thursday night at Anfield the home team looked set to advance to the final after a goal by Alberto Aquilani just before half-time was followed up by Yossi Benayoun in extra-time. With the aggregate 2-1 Liverpool were through. With that just a single goal to Atletico would give them the edge with the away goals.
That goal came in the 102nd minute when Jose Antonio Reyes shook off Glen Johnson to get into space. He then crossed to Diego Forlan who with only Reina to beat belted the ball into the top of the net.
Earlier in the match Liverpool saw a Daniel Agger goal waved off but he was clearly offside as a free kicked was crossed.
Over at Fulham the visiting German team missed the golden opportunity to play in the Europa League final at home. Hamburg were up 1-0 after a great goal from Mladen Petric after 22 minutes.
Fulham turned the match around in the second half with two goals to Davies in the 69th minute and Gera in the 76th minute. The final will be Fulham’s first major European final and will be played on May 12 in Hamburg.
