Petra Kvitova Wins 2011 Ladies Wimbledon Title
Petra Kvitova has defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final to win her first Grand Slam title.
Last year at Wimbledon Kvitova was knocked out at the semi-final stage, this year she not only made the final but won the title in front of her childhood inspiration Martina Navratilova.
Kvitova was on top from the start and did not show signs of nervousness as she moved towards the moment when the title was hers.
The Czech player has a good all round game, including a big lefty serve and you can expect to see plenty more of her in Grand Slam finals in the years ahead.
Sharapova wanted the title badly but could not do enough to defeat Kvitova despite breaking her in the very first game of the match. Kvitova hit back straight away.
In the fifth game two straight double faults from 30-30 by Sharapova handed Kvitova a break to go up 4-2. From there Kvitova wrapped up the first set.
Kvitova got a break in the first game of the second set only to see Sharapova break back a few games later. It was then Kvitova who broke again in game seven to set herself up for the title.
There was no stopping Kvitova and the title was hers.
