Libby Trickett takes Olympic swimming gold in 100m butterfly
August 11, 2008
Australia’s Libby Trickett has cruised to victory in the 100m butterfly final at the Beijing Olympic swim meet. Her winning time was 56.73 which was 0.12 outside of the world record set by Inge de Bruijn in 2000.
Trickett never looked like being troubled from her fellow swimmer’s. She hit the wall with a half body advantage over second placed Christine Magnuson of the USA who swam 57.10. Australia’s 2007 200m butterfly world champion Jessicah Schipper came in third with a time of 57.25.
Trickett’s gold medal is the second for the Australian Olympic swim team in Beijing and the second overall at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Australia’s Leisel Jones would be most likely to grab the next gold medal for Australia. This morning she cruised into the final of the 100m breaststroke final swimming a time of 1:05.80 in the second semifinal. The next best qualifier was Rebecca Soni of the USA who recorded a time of 1:07.07.
