Late Torres Double Keep Liverpool In Touch With Man Utd

Two last minute goals by Fernando Torres, his first since October last year, have helped Liverpool to a 2-0 win over a ten man Chelsea side.

The goals were scored in the 88th and 90th minutes to see Liverpool close the gap on Manchester United to two points. Man Utd have a game in hand.

Chelsea were reduced to ten men after Frank Lampard was sent off in the second half for a lunge Xabi Alonso. Following his dismissal Liverpool piled on the pressure in search of full points. With just minutes left on the clock it appeared that Liverpool were heading towards another frustrating home draw.

Thankfully Torres came to the rescue. Robbie Keane was left out of the Liverpool squad adding to speculation that the former Spurs player could make a return to his old club.

On Saturday Manchester United had pulled five points clear of both Liverpool and Chelsea after they had held on for a 1-0 win over Everton. The only goal for the match was scored from the penalty spot by Cristiano Ronaldo in the 44th minute.

Next weekend the top two teams travel away from home. Manchester United take on West Ham United at Boleyn Ground while Liverpool plays Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Man Utd has taken full points from their past six matches compared with 12 by Liverpool. Before Liverpool’s win over Chelsea the previous front runners had seen their title hopes slip with three straight draws.
