Jelena Dokic at Australian Open 2009There were four Australians in action on day 1 at the Australian Open tennis. Jelena Dokic was the only one to advance.

Dokic played an impressive match against Zuzana Ondraskova winning 6-3,6-2. She played with power and control to win in impressive fashion. It was more impressive after having dumped her coach, Dutchman Glenn Schaap, before the match.

In her press conference Dokic said, “Yeah, it was good. I think I played a pretty solid match. I had a tough match with her last year on clay. You know, she plays with a lot of topspin, can get a lot of balls in. I had to find the balance between being aggressive and, you know, not making errors. I think I did it perfectly”.

About the split with her coach Dokic said, ”

Yeah, I feel like, you know, he didn’t suit the type of tennis that I wanted to play. You know, just one of those people. Maybe he’s good for somebody else, but I didn’t feel that click, basically. That’s it, you know, nothing else. Yeah, that was my feeling inside. I went by my instinct. I think I made the right choice”.

Peter Luczak who followed Dokic on Margaret Court arena had no such luck against no. 17 seed Ivan Ljubicic. The Australian lost in straight sets, 6-3,6-3, 7-6(2).

Olivia Rogowska never got into her match against Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina losing 6-3, 6-1. She said after the match that nerves got the better of her and she was not able to swing freely.

Jarmila Groth went into the open at the top of her game after impressive showings at the Brisbane and Hobart tournaments. She of course won the title in Hobart and headed to Melbourne full of confidence. Unfortunately she drew a tough first round opponent. Yanina Wickmayer is the 21st seed and reached the 4th round in 2010.

Groth played a solid match however Wickmayer made the most of her opportunities and advanced to the second round following a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win. Groth let Wickmayer get the jump on her early in all of the sets. In the deciding set Groth had a chance to get back on serve when in the fourth game she had 0-40 but Wickmayer dug herself out of that hole and held serve from that game onwards to claim victory.
