Japan Wins 2011 AFC Asian Cup

Japan has defeated fierce rival Australia 1-0 to win the AFC Asian Cup for 2011. They won 1-0 after scoring a goal in extra-time when substitute Tadanari Lee scored in the 109th minute. Nagatomo provided the cross that saw an unmarked Lee unleash a powerful left foot volley that left Australia’s Mark Schwarzer with no chance.

The Socceroos had plenty of chances to score however could not find the back of the net. They came oh so close just after Robbie Kruse went on to replace Harry Kewell in extra-time. That move almost was a masterstroke as Kruse had his header swatted away by the Japanese keeper as it was about to find the back of the net.

A minute later Matt McKay blasted a left foot shot just over the crossbar.

This was a match that Australia had the best of the chances but unless you convert them you don’t win matches. The Socceroos had 18 shots on target to 10 for Japan.

Well done to Japan the 2011 AFC Asian Champions.

For the Socceroos it has been a good tournament in what was just their second appearance in the Asian Cup. In 2007 they also lost to Japan. That time it was in the quarterfinals when Japan won a penalty shootout.

We now look ahead to the next tournament that will be hosted by Australia in 2015.
