Hughes Scores Tons in Both Innings to Break Record

Cricket ball and stumpsAustralia’s new test cricket opener Phil Hughes has achieved in his second test what it took Don Bradman 20 years to pull off. I am talking about his feat of scoring a century in each innings of a test match.

Hughes scored 115 in Australia’s first innings and has backed that up with an unbeaten 136 not out at the end of day three. His second innings has been a lot more cautious but he still made it to the important milestone.

At 20 years old Hughes becomes the youngest player in test cricket to complete this feat. If Hughes is to manage not getting out in this innings he will have a test match average of at least 108, even if he is to be dismissed without scoring he will average over 80.

It is of course expected that his average will go down over time unless he really is Bradmanlike.

Australia on day three quickly wrapped up the South African tail to dismiss the home team for 138. As I had predicted there was no miracle coming from Steyn and Duminy, after all you can only expect something like they did in Melbourne once or maybe twice in a career.

With Hughes leading the way Australia managed to build a huge lead of 506 runs. At stumps they were 3-292. Katich after his first innings century added 30 runs, Ponting scored 81 and Hussey 19. Clarke is not out on 14.

The only results you would expect from this match are an Australian win or a draw. The draw is more than likely only going to come if rain keeps the players off the field for a large part of the remaining two days.
