Hewitt may miss Davis Cup playoff

Lleyton Hewitt is on his way back to Australia following the two masters series events in the US. He did not set the world on fire in the two tournaments.

Next on Hewitt’s schedule is the Asia/Oceania Davis Cup tie against Thailand. Unfortunately for Australian tennis fans Hewitt is in doubt for the tie which takes place in Townsville from 11 April.

Hewitt while competing in the Indian Wells tennis event suffered a left hip injury. Despite this he also played in the Miami masters event. He was hampered by this injury and lost in straight sets to Jose Acasuso in his first match of the tournament.

Hewitt is set to have an MRI scan in Sydney following his arrival from the US. It is not until then that the full extent of his injury will be known.

Regardless of the outcome Hewitt’s manager, David Drysdale, said Hewitt had every intention of joining fellow Australian Davis Cup squad members Peter Luczak, Chris Guccione and Paul Hanley in Townsville.

If Hewitt is forced to withdraw from the squad one of the hitting partners may get a promotion into the full squad. Brydan Klein and 2008 Australian Open boys champion Bernard Tomic have been invited.
