Henin Returns a Winner
In her first official WTA match since coming out of retirement, Justine Henin pulled off a first up win over Russia’s Nadia Petrova. Henin won the match 7-5, 7-5. Henin retired from the sport when at the top of the rankings 20 months ago.
Petrova is convinced that Henin a more “aggressive and dangerous” Henin will sweep aside all-comers to claim her comeback tournament. Henin is playing in the Brisbane International.
“It’s a different Henin. To me, it looks like she is playing better tennis than when she retired,” Petrova said after the high-quality first-round clash.
Henin now plays Kazakhstan’s Sesil Karatantcheva, who beat Casey Dellacqua 6-2 0-6 7-6(1). If all goes to plan we will witness the dream final of Henin up against the other comeback queen, Kim Clijsters. We all know what Kim did at the 2009 US Open.
In other notable matches Aussie Ana defeated Jelena Dokic. Aussie Ana is of course Ana Ivanovic who is now trying to take the mantle of Aussie Kim. Kim Clijsters was known as that during her time when she was in a relationship with Lleyton Hewitt. Ivanovic defeated Dokic 7-5 1-6 6-3. Dokic’s serve let her down in the third set, something she admitted after the match. “I think my serve let me down in the third set and I missed a lot of chances in the first set.
Ana Ivanovic is the girlfriend of Australian golfer Adam Scott. He was on hand to lend support from the stands.
Another comeback girl is Alicia Molik. She faces a tough round two match against Kim Clijsters on Tuesday in Brisbane.
