Formula One drivers championship Starts With Ferrari 1-2
The 2010 Formula One drivers championship got underway as the F1 cars took to the track for the Bahrain grand prix. In what was a fantastic start for Fernando Alonso, he led Ferrari to a 1-2 result.
For Red Bull it was the one that got away. Sebastian Vettel started from pole position and was running strongly before he had a sudden loss of power around lap 33. This allowed Alonso, Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton to pass. The problem was related to the exhaust.
To his credit Vettel held off Nico Rosberg to hold onto fourth position to gain vital points in the Formula One drivers championship for 2010.
Alonso setup his win early in the race as he got past Ferrari teammate Massa just after the start, then thanks to Vettel’s problem he found himself in the lead. Massa said after the race that from around 25 laps out he started thinking more of fuel and tyre conservation rather than pushing to take the lead. He was happy to take second position.
Hamilton was very happy to be on the podium as he did not expect such a good result in this race. Thanks to a good pit stop he was able to get past Rosberg to be able to take the third position. Jenson Button came in 7th and had to fight off Mark Webber for much of the race. Webber appeared to have the pace to get past however was never able to do so.
Michael Schumacher collected sixth position in his return to Formula One and said he was happy with that result as it gives him and the team “a good base to make progress”.
Of the new teams it was only Lotus that managed to get their drivers to the end of the race. Heikki Kovalainen was 15th and Jarno Trulli 17th.
In what is a good sign for Ferrari, every time they have opened a season with a 1-2 result they have gone onto have a driver win the Formula One drivers championship. The 1-2 in Bahrain was the fourth time in the teams history that they have opened the season with that result.
The Formula One drivers championship now moves to Australia where the Melbourne grand prix will be held in two weeks time. With cooler temperatures it will be a whole new ball game.
