F1 Bahrain Qualifying
The opening race in the Formula One drivers championship has seen the completion of qualifying.
Here is a quick summary of how things ended up team by team.
Red Bull
Sebastian Vettel (1st, Q3 – 1m 54.101s)
Mark Webber (6th, Q3 – 1m 55.284s)
Vettel was strong through all qualifying and came out late in Q3 to nail a fast lap and claim pole. Webber let himself down in the final moments of Q3 losing time after turn 16 and dropping to 6th.
Ferrari
Felipe Massa (2nd, Q3 – 1m 54.242s)
Fernando Alonso (3rd, Q3 – 1m 54.608s)
A good comeback for Massa after his terrible injury last season. Both Massa and Alonso are two time winners on this track.
Mercedes GP
Nico Rosberg (5th, Q3 – 1m 55.241s)
Michael Schumacher (7th, Q3 – 1m 55.524s)
Rosberg upstaged his more famous teammate to show he is an equal in this team. The team was not quite on the pace to match it with Red Bull and Ferrari. 7th position here matches the very first grid position Schumacher achieved at the start of his career in 1991.
McLaren
Lewis Hamilton (4th, Q3 – 1m 55.217s)
Jenson Button (8th, Q3 – 1m 55.672s)
Hamilton surprised himself to grab fourth position on the grid. He said they were lacking the pace to match the top teams. He is saying a win is not on the cards for his team. Is he just looking to add pressure to the Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari drivers? Button struggled for grip quite often but still managed a reasonable position on the grid.
Renault
Robert Kubica (9th, Q3 – 1m 55.885s)
Vitaly Petrov (17th, Q2 – 1m 56.619s)
Kubica lost a bit of time after turn 16 so thought he could have been a bit higher on the grid. Petrov was reasonable in his first ever qualifying in the Formula One drivers championship.
Force India
Adrian Sutil (10th, Q3 – 1m 56.309s)
Vitantonio Liuzzi (12th, Q2 – 1m 55.653s)
A good effort by Sutil to make Q3. Should be in the points in the race.
Williams
Rubens Barrichello (11th, Q2 – 1m 55.330s)
Nico Hulkenberg (13th, Q2 – 1m 55.857s)
With Barrichello’s experience will be interesting to see how he goes.
BMW Sauber
Pedro de la Rosa (14th, Q2 – 1m 56.237s)
Kamui Kobayashi (16th, Q2 – 1m 56.270s)
Just making up the numbers out on the track. Not likely to challenge the frontrunners.
Toro Rosso
Sebastien Buemi (15th, Q2 – 1m 56.265s)
Jaime Alguersuari (18th, Q1 – 1m 57.071s)
Virgin
Timo Glock (19th, Q1 – 1m 59.728s)
Lucas di Grassi (22nd, Q1 – 2m 00.587s)
Best of the new teams but way down on speed when compared to the top teams.
Lotus
Jarno Trulli (20th, Q1 – 1m 59.852s)
Heikki Kovalainen (21st, Q1 – 2m 00.313s)
A long season ahead for these guys.
HRT
Bruno Senna (23rd, Q1 – 2m 03.240s)
Karun Chandhok (24th, Q1 – 2m 04.904s)
As above for Lotus.
That is qualifying, the first for the 2010 Formula One drivers championship. It is a long hot race and as it is the first race of the season it is hard to know how reliable the cars will be. Should be an exciting race.
