EPL Scores – Liverpool 2-2 Birmingham City

November 10, 2009

EPL Scores – Monday 9 November 2009 – Liverpool scored early but then had to come from a 2-1 deficit to at least get a draw in their match at Anfield against Birmingham City.

David Ngog scored after 12 minutes following a Glenn Johnson cross from the right. Johnson beat two defenders before providing a cross which Ngog first had saved but he followed up to put Liverpool up 1-0.

Birmingham City hit back after 26 minutes when scoring from a set-piece. James McFadden got it started when firing a free-kick into the box which was headed back across goal by Roger Johnson, then nodded on by Scott Dan before Ecuador striker Benitez finally headed into goal from close range.

Steven Gerrard came on as a substitute on the 45 minute mark and a short time later Birmingham hit the front after a stunning 30-yard shot by Cameron Jerome found the back of the net.

With Liverpool down 2-1 the earlier confidence had faded and errors become more common. Gerrard almost got Liverpool back on level terms after 62 minutes when he headed a Johnson cross into the left-hand post.

Gerrard did get the score to 2-2 when he converted from the penalty spot after 71 minutes. This came after Ngog looked to have avoided a Carsley lunge. The referee thought otherwise and awarded the penalty.

In further bad news on the injury front, Liverpool lost Benayoun with a hamstring pull after 76 minutes. Fernando Torres was already on the sidelines with a groin injury.

For Liverpool the single point from a home game is nearly as damaging as a loss. The 2008-09 runners-up are now down in 7th spot on the EPL ladder and are 11 points from ladder topping Chelsea. For Liverpool any hope of an EPL title seems to be out of the question for this season. The more likely target would be a top four spot to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.
