EPL – Big Four All Win

Soccer BallThere was no change at the top of the English Premier League ladder following Saturdays matches.

Manchester United are still one point ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand, next come Chelsea four points adrift of Man Utd.

In the matches played Saturday Manchester United overcame Sunderland 2-1. Paul Scholes headed his team in front with a goal after 19 minutes. Sunderland, who are just above the relegation zone hit back on 55 minutes as Kenwyne Jones levelled the scores. It was again left to 17-year-old Federico Macheda to claim the winning goal for Man Utd. This time he struck in the 75th minute. Alex Ferguson rested keeper Edwin Van der Sar, left-back Patrice Evra and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Liverpool had briefly gone top of the EPL after a convincing 4-0 win over Blackburn at Anfield. It was an emotional day for Liverpool fans as they remembered the 96 people killed in the Hillsborough disaster which took place on April 15, 1989. Current Liverpool star Steven Gerrard lost a cousin in the tragedy.

On the pitch it was Fernando Torres who once again starred for the Reds. He put Liverpool ahead after just five minutes with a brilliant goal. He chested the ball and then spun and vollied the ball into the net. Another goal was scored by Torres after 33 minutes as he headed in a Xabi Alonso free kick. Daniel Agger and David Ngog added goals in the 83rd and 89th minute to comprehensively defeat Blackburn.

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink was unhappy with what he called a sloppy display from his team as they saw a 4-0 lead cut back to 4-3 with 12 minutes to play. A Drogba double and a goal each to Ballack and Lampard setup the win.

Arsenal came from behind with a second half blitz as they defeated Wigan Athletic 4-1. Wigan took the lead in the 17th minute after a goal to Mido. Theo Walcott started the comeback with a 60th minute goal after good leadup work by Andrey Arshavin. Silvestre added goal no. 2 after 71 minutes then late goals to Arshavin and Song Billong secured the points.

In other matches Stoke City drew 1-1 with Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur defeated West Ham United 1-0, Portsmouth drew with WBA 2-2, and Middlesbrough defeated Hull city 3-1.

So the race continues for the EPL Championship with Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea all in with a chance. At the other end of the ladder the fight to avoid relegation is wide open. Looking at the ladder there are probably 10 teams that could face the chop if they have a poor finish to the season.
