English Premier League Chelsea and Manchester United all square

April 27, 2008

The top two teams in the English Premier League, Manchested United and Chelsea faced each other today. Going into the match Man United held a 3 point lead over their London rivals in theĀ  race for the title.

Following a 2-1 victory over Manchester United, Chelsea are now level on points with Manchester United. The top spot is held by Man U due to a superior goal difference.

Chelsea have been in red hot form lately with 5 wins and a draw in their last six matches. This compares with Man U who have 3 wins, 2 draws and the loss to Chelsea.

In this game it was Chelsea’s Michael Ballack that was the difference. The German international scored two goals. The crucial one came in the 86th minute when he blasted home a penalty. Ballack had scored his first goal with a well placed header before Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney levelled the scores.

With two matches left for both teams the championship race is set to go down to the wire.

Manchester United play West Ham United and Wigan Athletic in their final two matches, while Chelsea will face Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers.

Mathematically Arsenal could still win the title however it is most unlikely. They would need to win their remaining 3 games and hope Manchester United and Chelsea both lost their final two games.
