Djokovic out of Wimbledon

June 26, 2008

Marat Safin has pulled off the biggest upset so far at the 2008 Wimbledon. He has defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-2.

Safin was playing at the top of his game in contrast to Djokovic who did not look at ease against the big Russian. Safin is of course a former world no. 1 and has won at the US Open and the Australian Open. Currently he is ranked 75 in the world.

So far this season Safin has not set the world on fire. He went out in the second round of the Australian Open and his best result to date was a quarterfinal in Munich.

Based on recent form you had to favor Djokovic going into the match. Nonetheless Safin is someone you would want to avoid in the second round of any tournament. Djokovic found out that Marat is back.

It now remains to be seen if this was a one off hot streak for Safin or can he play at a level to take him all the way to a Wimbledon title. Probably a bit soon to get too excited.

Let me know what you think. Who is your pick for the men’s title?

I’d be grateful if you can share this around using the link below as I am keen to hear from other tennis fans.
