Clijsters Ruins Henin Comeback
Kim Clijsters has defeated Justine Henin 6-3 4-6 7-6 (8-6) in the final at the Brisbane International. Henin held match points before succumbing to the power hitting of Clijsters.
The Clijsters win ruined what would have been the perfect comeback to tennis for the former world no. 1 Henin. A leg injury to Henin has ruined her comeback in Australia.
Henin has pulled out of the Sydney tournament but expects to be ready to play at the Australian Open which starts on 18 January.
In the final Clijsters was on top early winning the first set and then holding a 4-1 lead in the second. Henin then rallied on the back of a big charge to win the second set.
Henin closed in on a tournament victory when she had two match points in the third set before Clijsters held serve in the 10th game. Clijsters then dominated the early part of the tie-break before Henin again had a comeback to level at 6-6. A double-fault proved costly as Clijsters closed out the match on the next point.
The match was a slugfest and as Clijsters said after the match “”I think we set the bar pretty high for ourselves for the rest of the year.”
Clijsters whose daughter and husband watched the match from court side donated her prizemoney to Brisbane’s Royal Children’s Hospital.
