Chelsea Send Message to Man Utd
A 7-0 thrashing of Stoke City by Chelsea has sent a clear message to Manchester United that Chelsea are hungry for success in the English Premier League.
In what seems to have come down to a two team race for the title the win moved Chelsea one point clear on top of the EPL ladder. On Saturday Man Utd had defeated Tottenham 3-1 to take top spot.
A hat-trick from Salomon Kalou and a double from Frank Lampard went along with single goals to Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda to sent up the 7-0 scoreline.
To make matters worse for Stoke City they lost their Danish goalkeeper who was stretchered from the field with a suspected broken elbow. Thomas Sorensen was injured when he attempted to prevent Kalou scoring Chelsea’s second goal. For Sorensen it was a bitter blow as he is likely to the World Cup finals.
In Sunday’s other matches the race for fourth spot on the EPL ladder and the Champion’s League spot became more congested as Aston Villa went level on points with Tottenham after a 1-0 win over Birmingham City. Liverpool stayed in the race with a 4-0 thumping of Burnley. A win made more impressive considering they had a tiring Europa League fixture on Thursday.
Tottenham and Aston Villa are on 64 points however Spurs has a game in hand as do Manchester City who are on 63 points, then Liverpool is on 62.
Next weekend Liverpool face Chelsea at Anfield while Manchester United takes on Sunderland. The following weekend on May 9 Chelsea play Wigan and Manchester Utd play Stoke City to end the season.
