Stosur and Groth Advance to Round 4 at French Open

May 29, 2010

tennis ball imageOn Saturday in Paris no matter what happened at the French Open Australia was going to have a female player in the fourth round. This was due to the fact that we had an all Aussie matchup between Jarmilla Groth and Anastasia Rodionova.

The winner in the end was wildcard entrant Groth. She won 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to advance to her first ever Grand Slam fourth round.

Groth had let two match points slip in the second set and had to come from a break down in the third to take the match.

The 107th ranked Groth now meets Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan who defeated Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.

Sam Stosur also booked her fourth round spot by defeating Anastasia Pivovarova from Russia. Stosur won 6-3, 6-2 and now awaits the winner of the Maria Sharapova-Justine Henin match which was held over.

Henin and Sharapova are tied at a set apiece with the score 2-6, 6-3. Perhaps Henin was lucky to get the match sent to the next day as Sharapova was getting on top.

So Australia has two women in the fourth round of the French Open but no such luck on the men’s side. Lleyton Hewitt was the only male player to reach the third round and he lost yet again to Rafael Nadal. He went out in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Can Anyone Stop Rafa at French Open?

May 23, 2010

That was the question everyone was asking last year going into the French Open. As we all know the answer was yes as Robin Soderling pulled off the big upset and bundled Rafael Nadal out of the French Open.

This year Nadal goes into the French Open on yet another hot clay court streak. He won titles in Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid to stamp his authority over the rest of the clay court wannabees.

I find it hard to imagine that anyone will stand in his way this time around.

Nadal starts his quest for another Roland Garros title with a first round match against Gianni Mina from France. Mina is ranked 653 in the world. He finished 2009 as the world no. 2 junior.  He is yet to play a match on the ATP tour.

Rafael Nadal continues his amazing clay court form with another title. This time it was in Madrid.

In this form you would expect Nadal to be holding up the French Open trophy again this year.

Davis Cup Asia Oceania Playoff

May 8, 2010

Australia will be looking to advance from their Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Playoff when the doubles are played later today.

The Aussies started well with both Lleyton Hewitt and Carsten Ball winning in straight sets against their Japanese opponents.

Ball made history when he played his live singles match. It marked the first time a father and son had played for Australia  in live Davis Cup action.

Ball teams up with Paul Hanley to play Go Soeda and Takao Suzuki in the doubles. A win for the Aussies will see them move on with an unbeatable 3-0 lead.

In the other playoff tie Kazakhstan leads China 2-0.

Verdasco No Match for Nadal in Monte Carlo

April 19, 2010

tennis ball imageFernando Verdasco would have been better off staying in bed. He was just not able to compete with Rafael Nadal in the final of the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters. The final score was 6-0, 6-1.

With the tournament win Nadal becomes the first player in the Open era to win a tournament for six straight years. The title win also ended an 11-month title drought. He had last won in Rome, also on clay.

Nadal was in hot form in this tournament as he dropped the fewest number of games to win a title. His opponents could manage just 15 games.

Verdasco was playing in his first Masters series final. He also has never defeated Nadal, his record is now 0-10 against his fellow Spaniard.

In the after match press conference on Saturday following his semi-final win Nadal said this was his favourite tournament in the world.

With the form displayed at this tournament it would seem likely that Nadal will continue his dominance on clay and add another French Open title to his collection. That is assuming he stays healthy.

Sam Stosur On Fire – Wins Family Circle Cup

April 18, 2010

photo of a tennis ball on a tennis racquetSam Stosur started the best way possible in her WTA final against Vera Zvonareva, winning the first nine games. She was hitting winners from all parts of the court, 36 in total as she completed a 6-0, 6-3 win over her Russian opponent.

The match took 52 minutes which is the quickest final in the 38-year history of the Family Circle Cup.

Stosur was the no. 4 seed at the Family Circle cup, Zvonareva was seeded at no. 7. Stosur defeated Rybarikova, Dushevina, Peng, Hantuchova on her way to the final. She also had a bye in round one.

Zvonarva also had a round one bye. She then defeated De Los Rios, Bondarenko, Oudin and the top seeded Caroline Wozniacki, however that was a walkover after Wozniacki twisted her ankle and could not continue.

“To be able to play that well in a final is a great feeling. You always hope you’ll do that, but to actually go and perform that way is very, very pleasing,” said Stosur, who has now beaten Zvonareva five straight times. “Vera and I played a few weeks ago in Indian Wells and I was able to do it there too. Obviously I wasn’t taking anything for granted here, and I definitely had to play well.”

Zvonareva was playing in her 22nd career final and after the loss to Sam Stosur is 10-12.

“Right now I’m a little bit disappointed about the match. Overall I think it’s a good start to the clay court season though,” Zvonareva said. “It was my first clay court tournament in about two years, so I should be happy. Hopefully I can keep improving my game and play well the rest of the clay court season.

Stosur pockets $107000 for the win to go along with 470 rankings points.

Clijsters Wins Miami and Returns to Top Ten

April 4, 2010

Kim Clijsters defeated Sam Stosur in the quarters, fellow Belgium Justine Henin in the semis and then comfortably defeated Venus Williams in the Miami final to return to the top ten in women’s tennis.

Clijsters claimed her second Sony Ericsson title with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Williams. It was her 37th career singles title.

Williams had gone into the match on the back of a 15-match-winning-streak. This helped her to titles in Dubai and Acapulco, however against Clijsters this form went out the window.

Clijsters will next play at Marbella as a wildcard in the clay court tournament.
