San Diego Chargers take OT win against Colts

January 4, 2009

Last weekend the Chargers slaughtered the Denver Broncos to reach the NFL Playoffs. Saturday night in the AFC Wild Card game it took until 6 minutes 20 seconds in Overtime for the Chargers to snatch the win. The final score was 23-17 after Darren Sproles sprinted 22 yards for the winning touchdown.

For the Indianapolis Colts it was the second year in a row that they lost to the Chargers in the playoffs. Last season then went out at the Divisional Playoff stage, going down 28-24. Just two seasons ago the Colts went all the way and won the Super Bowl against the Chicago Bears.

Saturday night at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego the 12-4 Colts opened the scoring against the 8-8 Chargers when at the end of 9 plays and just over five minutes in possession the Colts saw Joseph Addai go up the middle for a 1 yard touchdown run.

San Diego came back early in the second quarter with LaDainian Tomlinson running over for a three-yard touchdown. That was the final play of the match for Tomlinson who went into the match with a groin injury.

The Colts went up 10-7 after Vinatieri kicked a 43 yard field goal with 6:51 to play in the second quarter. The teams continued to trade scores as this time Sproles went in for his first touchdown of the match on the end of a 9 yard run. The extra point was good to take San Diego out to a 14-10 lead.

To keep the pattern going the Colts were next to score after Peyton Manning launched a pass deep left to Reggie Wayne who caught the ball on the Chargers 45 and went all the way to complete a 72-yard play. The Chargers fell asleep on that play and were facing a 17-14 scoreline with 8:16 to play in the third quarter.

With 1:48 left in the match the Chargers took control of the ball after a punt reception was run back to the Colt’s 38 yard line. From there they worked the ball towards the line before setting up for a field goal. The attempt from 26 yards was good with 33 seconds left to play and the scores were level at 17.

Here was overtime. The Chargers got the ball from the kickoff and worked the ball for 11 plays and 6 minutes 20 before Sproles ran in for his touchdown.

The Chargers will now play either the Tennessee Titans who were 13-3 for the season or the 12-4 Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Arizona Cardinals have defeated the Atlanta Falcons 30-24 in the first of the Wild Card playoff games in the NFC. The win was the franchise’s first home playoff win since 1947 when the-then Chicago CardNFL footballinals beat Philadelphia to win the NFL championship.

Kurt Warner today got the scoring started with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald. Atlanta fought back to score twice in the last 2:55 of the first half to take a 17-14 lead into the break.

With the towel waving crowd cheering them on the Cardinals then setup the win with two third quarter touchdowns. The first came from a fumble by Atlanta’s Matt Ryan which was returned 27 yards by Antrel Rolle after just 52 seconds in the second half. This put the Cardinals in the lead for good.

Another touchdown came with 2:54 to play in the third quarter as Tim Hightower ran four yards to setup a 28-17 scoreline. The previous play saw Warner complete a 14-yard pass on the third-and-3 play.

Ryan was sacked in the End Zone for a safety to take the score out to 30-17 before Ryan then passed for a touchdown to White to give the Falcons some hope with 4:19 on the clock.

The Cardinals did not let the Falcons have a shot at victory as they controlled the remainder of the match to secure a matchup against either The New York Giants or Carolina Panthers. The Cardinals lost to both teams earlier this season.

Chargers Tomlinson in doubt for Wild Card game

January 4, 2009

In a story by Adam Schefter on the NFL site he writes about Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson and how he is unlikely to play in todays wild card game as he has a detached tendon in his groin area that is so bad doctors recommend that he have surgery this week.

Tomlinson is of course keen to play but if you can’t put in a 100 per cent effort you are letting the team down. He is mindful of how he felt after last season going out injured in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots. No player wants to limp out of a big game like that.

The Chargers take on the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Wild Card game on Saturday night starting at 8pm ET. The other AFC game is on Sunday between the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins.

The NFC Wild Card matches see the Philadelphia Eagles play the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday and the Atlanta Falcons play the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday starting at 4.30 pm ET.

It will be interesting to see if the Chargers can maintain momentum after there charge into the playoffs are looking down and out four weeks ago.

Who are you tips for the games this weekend?

San Diego charge into NFL playoffs

NFL playoffs are on the way

The San Diego Chargers have completed a remarkable run into the NFL finals after a 52-21 rout of the Denver Broncos. For the Chargers it is the result many expected at the start of the season with the team picked to win the division however it was a surprise how they did it after coming back from 4-8 earlier in the season.

For the Broncos the last three games saw a monumental collapse as they went from having a three-game-lead with three games to play to missing the playoffs. This is the first time since division play that a team has missed out from such a position.

The Chargers become the first team since the Cleveland Browns in 1985 to win a division at 8-8. What does that mean for them? Are they going into the playoffs as the weakest team? or have they peaked at the right time of the season?  The impressive win at Tampa Bay last weekend would suggest the latter.

The Chargers now are scheduled to meet Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night in the wild-card round. Last season the Chargers defeated the Colts 28-24 in the divisional playoffs. In the most recent meeting on November 23 it took a last second field goal by the Colts to defeat San Diego 23-20. It is anyones guess which San Diego team will show up for this match.

In other NFL action the New York Jets wimpered out of playoff contention with a 24-17 loss to Miami. This saw them go 1-4 over the last five games to miss the playoffs. Coach Eric Mangini has paid for the poor season ending form with his job as it was announced that he has been fired.

The Dallas Cowboys also crashed out of the playoffs with a 44-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles, thanks to other results made the playoffs. It took an upset win by the Oakland Raiders over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a Houston win over Chicago to pave the way for the Eagles. The Eagles play the NFC North champion Minnesota Vikings next Saturday.

The Vikings claimed the division with a late field goal clinching their match against the New York Giants, 20-19.

The first round of the playoffs is the Wild-Card Round. In the AFC Indianapolis play San Diego and Baltimore play Miami. In the NFC Atlanta play Arizona and Philadelphia play Minnesota.

Chargers still alive

December 23, 2008

Just three weeks ago the San Diego Chargers looked out of the NFL playoff picture. They were 4-8 for the season and were a few games behind the AFC West leaders, Denver Broncos. Now on the back of three wins, including a nail biting

22-21 win against Kansas City, they are back in the race for a playoff spot, and more importantly their destiny is in their hands.

The season has now come down to a winner-take-all finale between the Chargers and the Denver Broncos at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The game kicks off at 5:15 PM PT.

What has been looking like a season of great disappointment for the Chargers could be turned right around with a win over the Broncos. Coach Norv Turner’s future is probably riding on the win. If the Chargers make the playoffs and win a game or two, or for the big time Charger fans, make the Super Bowl he might be safe. If not he might face the sack.

There is also talk about disharmony in the Chargers locker room. What will a win do for the team spirit?

As I am a Charger fan I cannot wait to see the game next Sunday.

Giants go 11-1 and Burress to face weapons charge

December 1, 2008

The New York Giants continue to show the way in the NFL. They have moved to 11-1 for the first time in their history following a 23-7 victory over the Washington Redskins.

In other Giants news, the player who caught the superbowl winning touchdown for the Giants in the last Super bowl, Plaxico Burress, will be charged with criminal possession of a weapon after his accidental shooting at a nightclub, his lawyer said.

The whole incident sounds rather comical and would be funny if it were not true. Burress, allegedly had a gun in his pants. As he was having drinks with friends, including teammate Antonio Pierce, the gun slipped. When he grabbed for the gun, it discharged and injured Burress.

You can read more about the Burress shooting at the bloomberg website.

See a Dallas Cowboys Game in the new stadium in 2009

October 1, 2008

The new Dallas Cowboys stadium is on track to open for the 2009 NFL season. After reading about the stadium I suggest if you have a list of 100 things to do in your life add a Dallas Cowboys game at the new stadium. It sounds amazing.

The Cowboys have never been about checkered tablecloths and boots and hats,” Jones says. “They’ve been about glitz and glitter. Leave the other stuff to the Houston Texans.”

What is Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones talking about? It is they Dallas Cowboy style. Jones recently took LA Times journalist Sam Farmer on a two hour tour of the new stadium that will be home for the Cowboys from next season. It will also host the 2011 Super Bowl.

The stadium sounds amazing. This is to be expected with Jones in charge. I have it down as somewhere I want to visit in the future. I have recently seen the amazing stadiums in Beijing firsthand and after reading the article by Sam Farmer I can’t wait to see the new Dallas Cowboy stadium and take in a Dallas Cowboys game.

Here is how Farmer describes the stadium. “To envision the stadium, imagine taking a football and splitting it lengthwise. Now, pull it apart so there’s a space in the middle. That’s where the field is”.

NFL - Pittsburgh clip Ravens

September 30, 2008

American football photoGoing into week four of NFL action there were six undefeated teams. Coming out the other end, three remain. Three of the six to taste defeat for the first time this season were the Denver Broncos who lost to divisional rivals the Kansas City Chiefs 33-19, the Baltimore Ravens who were pipped at the post by a Pittsburgh field goal and Dallas who lost a close match against Washington 26-24.

The three remaining undefeated teams include the current Super Bowl champions, New York Giants who had a bye this week, Buffalo Bills who defeated the winless St. Louis Rams 31-14 and Tennessee Titans who defeated the Minnesota Vikings 30-17.

The Ravens played Pittsburgh in the Monday night game. The winner would lead the AFC North. After both teams got off to a slow start with a field goal each in the first quarter it was Baltimore who surged to the lead in the second. The score was 13-3 at the half.

Pittsburgh hit back with two touchdowns in the third quarter to setup an interesting finish. In the end the match was decided by an overtime field goal by Pittsburgh’s Jeff Reed who snuck over a 46-yard attempt.

Bruce Spingsteen to entertain crowd at Super Bowl XLIII

September 30, 2008

Bruce Springsteen to perform at Super BowlThe NFL has announced that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will entertain the crowd and the live audience of millions during the halftime show for Super Bowl XLIII.

The NFL Super Bowl XLIII is scheduled to be played on February 1, 2009 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, the second Super Bowl at this venue and the fourth overall in that city.

The halftime show is the most watched annual musical performance. Over recent times it is perhaps best remembered for the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction at Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston in 2004.

The first halftime show at a Super Bowl took place in 1967 at Super Bowl I. It was played on January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The show involved the marching bands from the University of Arizona and Grambling State University. In 1988 at Super Bowl XXII Chubby Checker started the tradition of big name musicians taking part in the show. Since then big name acts such as The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Shania Twain, Diana Ross and U2 have performed.

You can read more about the first Super Bowl halftime show at the AZcentral.com website. A list of Super Bowl halftime show performers is at Wikipedia.
