This weekend it is draft time in the NFL. The longtime losers in the NFL, Detroit Lions have put there faith in the hands of no. 1 draft pick Matthew Stafford from Georgia. Now they need some quality players to help build a team around the new quarterback.

Stafford has already signed a six-year contract, worth $72 million.

The no. 2 pick went to the St. Louis Rams, they selected Jason Smith out of Baylor. The Chiefs selected Tyson Jackson at 3, Aaron Curry was selected no. 4 by the Seahawks. No. 5 was Mark Sanchez who is a QB. He was selected by the Jets.

Rounding out the top ten is at 6 Andre Smith (Bengals), 7 Darrius Heyward-Bey (Raiders), 8 Eugene Monroe (Jaguars), 9 B.J. Raji (Packers) and 10 Michael Crabtree (49ers).

Terrell Owens on his way to the Buffalo Bills

March 8, 2009

Just two days after being released by the Dallas Cowboys Terrell Owens has agreed to a one-year contract worth $6.5 million to play with the Buffalo Bills.

He goes to the Bills with a history or rubbing his team mates the wrong way. The Cowboys were happy to say good bye to him in the hopes of improving the locker room atmosphere.

Looking at Owens’ performance on the field he did catch 69 passes for 1052 yards and 10 touchdowns last season with the Cowboys.

Owens is a six-time Pro Bowler and is second on the all-time list for career touchdown catches with 139. He still has some way to go to catch Jerry Rice, who had 197.

The Bills will be the fourth team that Owens has played for after previous stints with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Dallas.

Do you think the Bills have done the right thing by signing Owens? Leave you comment below.

Steelers Football Is Sixty Minutes

February 6, 2009

The Super Bowl has come and gone for another season. The title of the post sums it up. That is what Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said at the after match speech.

That is how it turned out in the Super Bowl last weekend. The match was not wrapped up until a fumble by Arizona’s quarter Kurt Warner in the last five seconds.

Before then we had seen the Arizona team come back from a 13 point deficit to take the lead in the last quarter. With under a minute left to play it looked like the surprise finalists would snatch the Super Bowl title. The score was 23-20 to Arizona at this stage. Larry Fitzgerald had not long before streaked clear for his second touchdown.

The Steelers were not leaving it at that. They made a final charge towards the Arizona line before Ben Roethlisberger flighted a great pass to Santonio Holmes who caught the ball with plenty of traffic around him. Did he get feet down in time, that was the question on everyone’s lips. After much review the decision was yes.

That was it the Steelers had gone to the lead with just over 40 seconds left. Arizona still had time but could not pull off the miracle win.The final score was 27-23 to Steelers.

“Steelers Football Is Sixty Minutes” is what it turned out to be. The Steelers have become the most successful franchise in the NFL as they racked up Super Bowl title no. 6.

The latest Super Bowl was able to match the excitement of last year. Too bad Arizona could not get the win. It would have been great to see Australia’s first Super Bowl participant win a title. Maybe next year.

I look forward to September when the next season will kick off.

Who Wants A Super Bowl Suite?

January 20, 2009

As we all know, the Super Bowl will be played on the first Sunday in February between the surprising Arizona Cardinals and the 2006 Super Bowl winners, Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fans are racing for tickets in an effort to be there on the big day. I can think of no place I would rather be on the day. Unfortunately for me I will have to settle for watching the game on tv. As I have been watching Super Bowl tickets prices for some time I note with interest that the top priced suite is still up for sale.

The Super Bowl Suite is available on several ticketing websites starting at $235001. You would think that they could leave off the extra dollar.

Just what do you get for your money if you buy the Super Bowl Suite at this price? For starters you get tickets for 16 people and you also get parking. All catering would be taken care of. You would have screens for watching instant replays.

You can see photos on the Raymond James Stadium website.

Just who would buy a Super Bowl Suite? I am guessing it is either someone like Bill Gates who would buy it to entertain his friends. If it is not him there are plenty of other people still in the money and who may want to go. Maybe a movie star would pick it up.

The likely purchaser of the Super Bowl Suite is a company that despite the trouble times in the USA still is doing ok. Is that company yours?

If you are interested in buying a Super Bowl suite for Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa click on the banner above. Prices start from $54900 for an eight person suite. Or if a suite is out of the question there are still great tickets available for individuals or a few buddies who want to go to the big game.

Buying Tickets for the Super Bowl?

January 20, 2009

The weekend saw the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals reached the Super Bowl.

It looks like one of the readers here at OneManSportsNetwork is off to the Super Bowl in Tampa. I saw in my stats that they purchased a ticket. It looks like all the lower priced tickets have been snapped up as the best price I can see is $1521 for an upper level end zone ticket.

The lucky person that already got the Super Bowl ticket paid less than a thousand dollars. I would love to be going there myself but just now it is out of the question due to the fact that I live in Australia and don’t have much spare cash lying around.

I do plan on making it in the next couple of years. Following the NFL from here I always make sure I watch the Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLIII will be more special for Australians as Ben Graham is in the squad. Unfortunately he is currently injured and is listed as being questionable. If he does take his place in the team he will be the first Australian to play in the Super Bowl.

Getting back to tickets from what I can see, the Ticket Network guys have the best prices. I looked at StubHub, TicketsNow, OnlineSeats amongst other. The lowest price I saw was $1521 for tickets through Ticket Network.

Also when comparing the price of the Super Bowl Luxury Suite it is listed for $235001 at Ticket Network. This compares with $241 500 at TicketsNow and $288 243 at StubHub.

Tickets have a price range from $1521 to $7651. If you are looking for a Super Bowl suite they seem to range from $54 900 to the above mentioned $235 001.

Are you looking to buy tickets for the Super Bowl? What is the factor that influences you when buying online? If you want to check out the tickets at TicketNetwork click on the banner below.

If you are the reader who clicked my link I would love to hear from you when you go to the Super Bowl.

Steelers looking for Super Bowl title number six

January 19, 2009

The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl just three years ago. That win made it five Super Bowl titles for the NFL club.

The Steelers have now earned the right to play for title no. 6 after they defeated the Baltimore Ravens 23-14. As expected it was a grinding match.

The Steelers took the early lead with a field goal and controlled things from there.

You can read the Steelers / Ravens match report at NFL.com.

Ben Graham first Aussie into Super Bowl but will he play?

January 19, 2009

Ben Graham and Saverio Rocca, both well known to Australians. Today one of them was going to make history as the first Australian to earn a spot in a Super Bowl. Both players had left Australian Rules football to try their luck in the NFL.

In a unique situation the pair faced each other when their teams met for a clash to earn a Super Bowl XLIII berth. Ben Graham was the kicker for the Arizona Cardinals and Sav Rocca had the kicking duties for the Phiadelphia Eagles.

In other sports we have seen Aussies play in Baseball’s World Series and also Luc Longley and Andrew Gaze have collected NBA Championship rings. But now we have a player set to take part in one of the truely great sporting occasions.

The Super Bowl ranks right up there when it comes to sporting events. You of course have the soccer World Cup and the Olympics, but they come around just every four year. The Super Bowl is a huge annual sporting spectacular. Super Bowl XLIII will be played on February 1, 2009 at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Florida.

Ben Graham became the first Australian player to reach that big stage as the Cardinals defeated the Eagles 32-25 in Phoenix.

Graham started his NFL career with the New York Jets, where he spent four seasons. Luckily for him he was not wanted and fate lead him to Arizona. The rest his history. Rocca joined the Eagles in the 2007 pre-season.

Graham now 35, played for the Australian Rules team Geelong from 1993 to 2004. Rocca also 35, played 257 games for Collingwood and North Melbourne from 1991-2006.

Colin Scotts who was really the pioneer for Australians in the NFL said before the match “Ben Graham or Sav Rocca will be absolute rock stars in the US for being in the Super Bowl and being the first Australian to be in the Super Bowl. You can’t put words to it, it’s a religion in America, you get 300 million people watching over there … I’m just so proud to think there’s going to be an Aussie out there.” Scotts played for the St Louis Cardinals in 1987.

In the match itself Graham was not at his best. He kicked five times for 186 yards at an average of 37.2 yards. His best punt was 44 yards. Rocca had just one punt for 58 yards.

Ben Graham is under a bit on an injury cloud in the lead up to the Super Bowl. He has a groin injury. Here’s hoping that he can take his spot on Super Bowl Sunday.

No Kidding the Cardinals Are Off To The Super Bowl

January 19, 2009

NFL footballThe Arizona Cardinals were once seen by many as a joke in the NFL. That has all changed now! They are the first team to take their place in the 2009 Super Bowl.

This comes following their exciting 32-25 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Phoenix.

For Kurt Warner it will be another shot at a Super Bowl ring after leading the St. Louis Rams to a title back in Super Bowl  XXXIV.

The match started well for the home team as Kurt Warner hit Larry Fitzgerald down the middle for nine yards after a 5:40 opening drive. The extra point giving the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. Fitzgerald made the catch between the hashmarks before brushing away the potential tackles of two Philadelphia defenders to cruise into the end zone.

The Eagles could only manage a field goal on their opening possession. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-3.

The Cardinals looked to have busted the game wide open in the second quarter as they piled on 17 points to 3. The Cardinals first scored with another touchdown to Fitzgerald. This one will make the highlight reels as Warner threw twice in one play to find Fitzgerald again as he out-jumped an Eagles defender before completing the play by running into the end zone for a 62 yard TD.

The next Eagles play was again ended with a field goal as they were unable to breach the Cardinals line. With 9:05 to play in the second quater the score was 14-6. More was to come for the Cardinal fans. Once again it was Warner to Fitzgerald on a fade play as the Arizona receiver went in for his third TD. The score was now out to 21-6. The Cardinals ended the first quarter with a field goal to make the half time score 24-6.

Was that enough for the Cardinals to earn their first ever Super Bowl berth? As the match unfolded it was looking like they were tanking and the Eagles worked their way to a 25-24 lead with 10:56 to play in the match.

A touchdown was scored by the Eagles through Brent Celek at the 4:13 mark in the third quarter to trim the lead to 24-13. McNabb connected again with Celek for a 30-yard scoring strike, the score was now 24-19.

A 62-yard touchdown throw by McNabb to DeSean Jackson saw the Eagles on the back of a 18-0 run take the lead.

Would the Eagles continue the roll or did the Cardinals have an answer? As we saw the Cardinals did in fact have the answer. With 2:29 to play in this exciting match Warner hooked up with Tim Hightower to score what was the game winning touchdown.

Is this a fairytale or what? The Cardinals with the third oldest quarterback in the game are off to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa for Super Bowl XLIII. Warner has done it before, can his team help him win another ring?

Tony Dungy steps down from Colts

January 13, 2009

The head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Tony Dungy, has decided to call it a day after 31 years in the NFL.

“Don’t shed any tears for me,” Dungy said after announcing his retirement. “I’ve gotten to live a dream that most people don’t get to live. What phase two will be, we’ll find out. But phase one has been awfully special.”

Dungy became the first African American coach to win a Super Bowl when he guided his Colts team to the title on February 4, 2007. On that day the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears.

Dungy was head coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001. He then was head coach of the Colts from 2002 to 2009.

He was not only a coach in the NFL, Dungy was a player with the Pittsburgh Steelers after signing as a free agent in 1977. He played in the 1978 Super Bowl team with Pittsburgh before being traded to San Francisco in 1979. His career ended in the training camp of the New York Giants in 1980.

NFL Away Teams Rule Except in Pittsburgh

January 13, 2009

Over the weekend in the NFL Divisional Playoffs it was a good weekend for the away teams. Three of the four picked up wins on  the road. The odd one out were the San Diego Chargers who lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The scores for the weekend follow:

San Diego Chargers 24 lost to Pittsburgh Steelers 35

Philidelphia Eagles 23 beat New York Giants 11

Arizona Cardinals 33 beat Carolina Panthers 13

Baltimore Ravens 13 beat Tennessee Titans 10

From the weekend we saw the demise of the 2008 Super Bowl Champions as the Eagles proved to be too good for the Giants. The surprise team of the playoffs continues to be the Cardinals as they marched into the NFC Championship match and will host the Eagles.

The AFC Championship match sees the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens.

It promises to be an exciting weekend for NFL fans as the two teams to play in the Super Bowl are decided. Who are you rooting for?
