In the words of Lewis Hamilton his win at Silverstone in the Formula One Grand Prix “was the toughest win of my career, but definitely the best.”
The rain played havoc as drivers were spinning around like novices. Mark Webber had a spin on the very first lap to waste his front row grid position. He lost it on the entrance to Becketts and had to wait for the field to pass before being able to safely rejoin the race. He was not the only one as nearly ever driver had a spin or near miss at some stage throughout the race.
For some the spin sent them out of the race, others just got on with things. Felipe Massa was lucky enough to survive six spin outs. All the lost time left him out of the points.
Hamilton took the lead on the fifth lap and maintained his advantage to the end. At times the rain pelted down and teams had to decide if they should go for full wets or stick with the intermediates. Some had the decision made for them although it was too late after they had crashed out.
Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button did go for the extreme wet tyres on the 35th lap and the decision paid off for Barrichello. He made his way through the field to grab third position. Button was not so lucky as he slid off the course even with the wets.
Nick Heidfeld drove well to grab second spot on the podium.
The results from the British Grand Prix sees Hamilton join Massa and Raikkonen to lead the world championship race with 48 points apiece, with Kubica fourth on 46.
The next race is in Germany on July 20 at the Hockenheim track.
BMW goes one-two in dramatic Canadian Grand Prix
June 9, 2008
BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica has finally won a race for his team following an eventful Canadian Grand Prix. His teammate Nick Heidfeld picked up second and David Coulthard came in a surprise third for Red Bull.
You may be wondering what happened to Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen. Unfortunately for them both a pit lane collision ended their race. After refueling Raikkonen was heading out of pit lane. For some reason there was a red light. He stopped and Hamilton did not. The result was both drivers were out of the grand prix.
You might say Kubica was gifted the race by Hamilton but that is motor racing. You take the good with the bad. Just last year Kubica was involved in a horrific accident on the same track that he has now claimed victory.
The one-two result for BMW Sauber consolidates second spot in the constructor championship. The only trail Ferrari by three points.
Following his win Kubica now leads the drivers championship with 42 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa on 38. Reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen is on 35.
Hamilton has a 10 grid spot penalty going into the next race following his pit lane accident.
The next race will be in France on 22 June.
Hamilton takes Monaco and championship lead
May 26, 2008
Lewis Hamilton has won the Monaco grand prix in difficult conditions. He now leads the drivers championship.
Rain fell during the race making it a challenge for all the drivers. Without traction control in 2008 it was quite easy to be heavy with the throttle and dump the car into the barriers.
Felipe Massa was leading the race when he made an error that allowed Hamilton to eventually take the lead.
Raikkonen was never really in the race today and ended up taking ninth place.
Hamilton lead home Kubica with Massa coming home in third. Australia’s Mark Webber completed another solid grand prix and claimed fourth place.
Hamilton now leads the championship by three points from Raikkonen, with Massa another point down.
The next grand prix is in Canada in two weeks at Montreal.
Massa loves Turkey Formula 1
May 12, 2008
Felipe Massa just loves Turkey. Not the one that you eat but the country. He has just wrapped up his third consecutive victory at the Turkish Grand Prix.
After starting from pole position the Ferrari driver has lead the field for most of the race to move himself into contention in the drivers championship in Formula 1.
The race had only just got underway when the first accident took place. Fisichella should have stayed at home. He crashed out on the first turn. That now makes it three years running that he has not even completed a lap. The accident saw the safety car come out.
Massa was overtaken by Hamilton at one stage however a three stop strategy compared to the two from most other drivers including Massa allowed him back into the lead as Hamilton went to the pits.
At the end of the race it was Massa who took the chequered flag ahead of Hamilton, championship leader Raikkonen was third.
Raikkonen still leads the championship however Massa and Hamilton have closed the gap to seven. They both share second spot.
In the constructors’ championship Ferrari have extended their lead to 19 points over second placed BMW Sauber, with McLaren a further two points behind in third position.
Ferrari go one-two in Spanish formula 1 grand prix
April 28, 2008
Kimi Raikkonen has lead Ferrari to a one-two finish in Spain. His team mate Felipe Massa came home 3.2 seconds behind the 2007 world champion. Third place went to Mclaren’s Hamilton.
The one-two result allowed the Ferrari team to regain the lead in the constructor’s table ahead of BMW Sauber.
Raikkonen started the race from pole position and extends his lead in the drivers’ championship. Ferrari have won the past 3 grand prix’s. Raikkonen’s two victories were split by his team mate Massa who won in Bahrain.
Earlier in the race Kovalainen in a Mclaren crashed out heavily and was stuck in a tyre wall. It appeared that something broke on his car which sent him crashing out at high speed. Reports later in the race said the driver was fine, with no visible signs of injury.
Australia’s Mark Webber placed a solid fifth after being helped up the track following Alonso’s car having mechanical problems.
The next formula one grand prix is to be held in two weeks in Turkey.
Danica Patrick history making motorsport win
April 21, 2008
It has been some time coming but Danica Patrick has the honour of being the first female to win a major auto racing event on a closed-course circuit.
The history making win came in the rain delayed IndyCar event held in Japan. This was Patrick’s 50th IndyCar series race.
You could call the win lucky, or you could say it was good strategy from her team. Patrick was able to take the lead as the other top contenders were forced into the pits to top up the fuel late in the 200-lap race.
Patrick first grabbed motorsports attention when in the 2005 Indianapolis 500 she become the first female to lead the famous motorsport race.
The monkey is now off the back of Danica Patrick following this historic win. She has said she had become tired of answering the when are you going to win question.
The next race for her is the RoadRunner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway in a week.
