Liverpool Might Be Chinese Owned

August 3, 2010

Chinese businessman Kenny Huang could be the next owner of the Liverpool Football club. He is head of a Hong Kong based investment company QSL Sports Ltd. He is one of several parties hoping to take over from American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillet.

Having a Chinese owner would probably a good move as it would boost Liverpool’s already high profile in Asia and could lead to millions more viewers watching matches across Asia.

Benitez Leaves Liverpool

June 7, 2010

Rafa Benitez has left Liverpool by mutual consent. This ends his run as Liverpool manager which started in June 2004.

Benitez failed to capture a Premier League title but will forever be remembered as the manager that led Liverpool to the Champions League in 2005 when the team came from 3-0 down to defeat Milan in a penalty shootout.

The team also won the FA Cup in 2006 when they defeated West Ham on penalties.

The Spaniard is now looking a good shot to take over at Inter Milan after Jose Mourinho moved to Real Madrid.

As a Liverpool supporter it is sad to see Rafa leave the club.

Now the search is on for a replacement but with the club up for sale that could be delayed until the ownership issue is sorted out. Liverpool are 351 million pounds in debt.

EPL scores – Manchester United Stunned by Burnley

August 20, 2009

Soccer ballOn Tuesday and Wednesday there were six games played in the EPL. You can scroll to the end and see the EPL Scores from those matches.

The big news was the 1-0 loss for Manchester United at the hands of newcomers to the English Premier League, Burnley. The defending champions were defeated at Turf Moor after a Robbie Blake goal in the 18th minute. It was however Brian Jensen who was the hero for the night after he saved a penalty to deny Man Utd at least taking a draw.  Burnley were playing at home in the top flight for the first time since 1976 so it was a great day for their fans.

On Tuesday night Chelsea had gone to the top of the EPL after their away win at Sunderland. The came from a goal down to claim full points. Tottenham knocked them off top spot the next night after Spurs won comfortably.

Liverpool got their home season off to a great start defeating Stoke City 4-1 at Anfield. Fernando Torres scored early to set the scene. He scored after four minutes thanks to lead up work by Steven Gerrard. It took until the 45th minute for Liverpool to double the lead when Glen Johnson scored. Dirk Kuyt (78) and David Ngog (90) completed the scoring.

Last season Stoke City held Liverpool to a draw in the corresponding match. That result proved costly as the Reds just missed out on the title which was won by Man Utd.

EPL scores – Liverpool stumbles at first hurdle

August 17, 2009

Soccer ball - FootballThe Sunday EPL scores saw Manchester United open their title defence with a 1-0 win over Birmingham City. Liverpool on the other hand gave up ground after a 2-1 loss away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Of the big four it was only Liverpool that failed to win their opening match. Benoit Assou-Ekotto gave Spurs a 1-0 lead just a minute before the half-time break after he fired in a stunning 25-yard strike. Liverpool got level after a 56th penalty was converted by Steven Gerrard. The penalty was awarded after Heurelho Gomes fouled Glen Johnson.

Spurs did not wait long to take the initiative again as Sebastien Bassong headed home the winner three minutes later. Bassong joined Spurs from Newcastle United for 8 million pounds so he is money well spent so far. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said after the match that he felt his side deserved the win. Liverpool’s pre-season form has now shown things need improvement if they are to challenge for the title.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez of course said Liverpool needs to improve, especially in the middle. Liverpool lost a key midfielder after Xabi Alonso moves to Real Madrid in the off-season. Benitez does not lay the blame on not having Alonso as they won plenty of games last season without him in the team.

Liverpool plays mid-week against Stoke City at home.

Manchester United saw Wayne Rooney tap in from close range after his header had come back off the post 34 minutes into their match against Birmingham City. Man Utd are of course playing without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo who headed over to Real Madrid.

Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor scored early for his new team when he thumped home a Shaun Wright-Phillips lay-off into the back of the opposition net after three minutes.

Chelsea were lucky to escape with full points from their match against Hull. It took an injury time chip shot by two goal hero Didier Drogba to claim the win.

Manchester United Claim English Premier League Title

May 17, 2009

Going into their match against Arsenal, Man Utd knew just a point was enough to take the EPL title. Following a goalless draw the title is theirs.

The best scoring opportunities went to Cristiano Ronaldo who went close from a free kick and Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas hit the post. If only that one went in, at least that’s what Liverpool fans would have been thinking.

Now that the EPL title has been wrapped up attention turns to the relegation race. After the latest matches Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and WBA are in the drop zone. Hull City wriggled their way out for the time being with a 1-1 result against Bolton. Newcastle who finally got a win under Allan Shearer in their previous match lost to Fulham 1-0. WBA play on Sunday against Liverpool. A loss will see them relegated. Middlesbrough had a draw against Aston Villa.

Manchester United will now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League where they will take on Barcelona for the crown. For Liverpool and Chelsea there is still the battle for second spot on the ladder and the automatic qualification into the group stage of the Champions League.

Next weekend will see the season come to an end.

Newcastle are now three points adrift of Hull City who occupy the last spot above the drop zone.

Everton got back in the winners circle with a 2-0 win over Sunderland. The win moves Everton into fifth place in the Barclays Premier League. Sunderland is five from the bottom and will need to pick up a few points to ensure they stay in the EPL.

Manchester United Down 0-2 Then…

April 26, 2009

Manchester United played the late match on Saturday in the English Premier League. Earlier in the day Liverpool had moved to the top of the ladder with a 3-1 win over Hull City.

Man Utd were playing Tottenham Hotspur and at halftime found themselves down 2-0. Goals were scored in the first half by Darren Bent and Luke Modric. If Liverpool fans were thinking this was the chance for their team to make up ground on United the red devils were having none of that.

Man Utd came out firing in the second half and knocked in five goals. Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney scored a double and Dimitar Berbatov scored the fifth.

The win sees Manchester United back out to a three point lead at the top of the EPL ladder, they of course still have a game in hand. The makeup that game on May 13 against Wigan Athletic. United’s toughest test will come when they play Arsenal at Old Trafford on May 16.

Arshavin Show Dents Liverpool Title Hopes

April 22, 2009

Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin has slowed down Liverpools race for the 2009 English Premier League. He scored an incredible four goals as Liverpool and Arsenal played out an exciting 4-4 draw at Anfield.

Arshavin scored in the 33, 66, 69 and 90th minutes, while Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun scored twice for Liverpool. Benayoun’s second goal which came in injury time helpled salvage a point for Liverpool.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said, “I am very disappointed because we conceded four goals we wouldn’t normally concede”.

The point sees Liverpool take top spot on goal difference however Manchester United have two games in hand starting at home against Portsmouth on Wednesday.

So far the story of the season for Liverpool has been the number of draws at home, seven so far. They would have had the title wrapped up by now if their home record matched recent seasons. Liverpool did manage to improve their form away from Anfield however the number of draws at home is of some concern.

Liverpool now has five matches left to complete the season. They play Hull City (a), Newcastle United (h), West Ham United (a), West Brom (a) and end the season at Anfield with a match against Tottenham Hotspur.
