Patty as he prefers to be called comes from my hometown of Canberra, Australia. The Trail Blazers lost their most recent match against Atlanta Hawks to have an 8-4 record.

NBA Ring Inspires Rockets Over Lakers

November 16, 2009

The Houston Rockets visited the LA Lakers on Sunday night. Both teams were coming off a loss. The Lakers were thumped by the Denver Nuggets, the Rockets lost to the Sacramento Kings.

Before the match Trevor Ariza was presented his NBA championship ring which he won as part of the Laker roster in 2008-09. Ariza’s new Houston Rocket teammates saw the ring and it was Aaron Brookes who said it inspired him. He led the Rockets with a career-high 33 points which included five 3-pointers.

Early in the match it looked as though the Lakers were going to coast to victory. Former Rocket Ron Artest scored eight points after five minutes and the Lakers were out to a 16-2 lead. The Rockets chipped away at the lead and by the first quarter break they had got the score to a more respectable 29-23.

Australian David Andersen came off the bench and also posted career-high points to give the Rockets a boost as they outscored the Lakers 29-25, 28-19 and 21-18 in the next three quarters. Andersen scored 19 points and pulled in 6 rebounds.

The Lakers had no answer to the hustle of the Rockets and went down 101-91. The loss leaves the Lakers in fifth on the Western Conference ladder with a 7-3 record while the Rockets are in sixth with 6-4.

Next on the Houston Rockets schedule is a match against Phoenix in Houston on Tuesday night.

Hornets Fire Byron Scott

November 13, 2009

basketballByron Scott has gone from coach of the year in 2008 after his team was 56-26 to being not wanted in the early part of the 2009-10 NBA season.

The New Orleans Hornets fired Scott early Thursday morning. This came after his team had fallen to 3-6 after a 124-104 loss to Phoenix.

Scott is replaced by the New Orleans Hornets general manager Jeff Bower. Bower will be assisted by the coach that Scott replaced several years ago, Tim Floyd.

“Accountability was our theme this past summer,” Hornets vice president Chad Shinn said in a statement released by the team. “We talked about the fact that everyone on our staff is held to a certain standard of performance and we didn’t feel this was happening at the head coach level.

Last season  we saw six NBA coaches fired in the first two months of the season with a seventh fired after the All-Star break. No doubt more will follow Scott out the exit door this season.

Aussie NBA watch – Friday 6 November

November 7, 2009

Photo of a basketballThe NBA currently has four Australians on the rosters. Andrew Bogut is the best known of the bunch, having been drafted at no. 1 for the Bucks back in 2005. He is joined in the NBA by David Andersen who plays for the Houston Rockets, Nathan Jawai for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Patrick Mills who is with the Portland Trail Blazers.

In Friday night action it was the clash of the Australians as Bogut and his Bucks took on the Timberwolves. It was Bogut who got the better of Jawai as his team ran out 87-72 victors. The Bucks are now 2-2, while the Timberwolves are struggling at 1-5. Bogut scored 17 points and pulled in 10 rebounds while Jawai got just two points and one rebound.

David Andersen’s Houston Rocket team defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 105-94 in Houston. Andersen who joined the Rockets this season to fill the hole left in the center after Yao Ming was ruled out for the season scored two points and grabbed on defensive rebound in his just under seven minutes of action. The Rockets are 4-2, sitting in fourth on the Western Conference ladder.

Patrick Mills saw his team get a 96-84 win over the San Antonio Spurs. Mills is yet to play this season and is inactive. The Trail Blazers are now 2-3 for the season.

Boston and Denver fall to end unbeaten streaks

November 7, 2009

The only team in the NBA with a 0 in the win-loss columns is now the New Jersey Nets. For them it does not mean they are undefeated. Unfortunately they are yet to win a single game in the 2009-10 NBA season.

The Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets both lost on Friday night to end their season opening win streaks at 6 and 5 respectively. The Celtics dropped a game at home to the Phoenix Suns. The final score was 110-103. Jason Richardson top scored for the Suns with 34. Kevin Garnett’s 26 was not enough to keep the Celtics unbeaten.

The Denver Nuggets were on the road and took at Miami. The Heat got the better of the visitors and ran out 96-88 winners over the previously undefeated Nuggets. The Nuggets were well beaten and the scoreline was only made to look respectable following a 32-18 final quarter. Dwayne Wade top scored for Miami with 22 points. Carmello Anthony scored 30 points for the Nuggets.

The New Jersey Nets went close to getting their first win losing 94-97 away to the 76ers.

NBA – Who will be last to fall?

November 5, 2009

With the 2009-10 NBA season just over a week old it will be interesting to see who can open with the longest win streak. Some of the favourites to pick up this honor have already stumbled. The Lakers lost early, as did the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After having played six games it is the Boston Celtics who are looking likely to have the best season opening win streak. The only other unbeaten team is the Denver Nuggets who are 5-0.

The Timberwolves went close to ending the streak for the Celtics after a 90-92 loss at home on Wednesday night. This was the closest the Celtics came to losing in this new season. The previous smallest margin of victory was the six point win on the opening night away to Cleveland. Since then the Celtics have racked up some convincing wins. The most recent before the Timberwolves match was a 105-74 win over the 76ers.

Denver as I mentioned are 5-0 and lead the Western Conference early in the season. They have two tough games against 4-1 teams, both on the road. Next up is Miami on Friday night, followed up by Atlanta on Saturday. The road trip continues on the Tuesday and Wednesday with matches against the Bulls and then the Bucks. If the Nuggets get through all of those games without a loss there will be a huge match at home against the Lakers on Friday 13th.

The Celtics are at home against the Phoenix Suns in their next match on Friday, followed by an away match against the Nets. Then it is the Jazz at home on Wednesday, then the Hawks on Friday 13th.

Who will it be that gets the longest season opening win streak? I am tipping the Celtics. Leave your thoughts below.

Ron Artest Says He Is To Blame If Lakers Don’t Repeat

September 22, 2009

basketballRon Artest is the new guy on the LA Lakers roster going into the 2009-10 NBA season. He switched places with Trevor Ariza who swapped with Artest at the Houston Rockets.

Artest was making his first promotional visit for the Lakers when he made an appearance in San Diego. He came out and said blame me if LA don’t win the 2009-10 NBA title.

“They won last year, and I’m the new addition. The fans expect to repeat. Everybody in L.A. expects a second ring. And if we don’t then yeah, they should point it right at me, throwing tomatoes and everything.” said Artest while on duty to promote the NBA exihibition match between the Lakers and the Denver Nuggets that will be played at the San Diego Sports Arena on October 23.

It seems I know a bit more about San Diego than Artest. He had to ask if the city of San Diego has a baseball team in the major league. They of course have the Padres. Artest was even wearing a Padres hat when he asked that question.

Artest said, “and I’m also here to say that next year I’ll be trying out for the San Diego Chargers, so I look forward to that. Hopefully I can play some baseball. Is there a baseball team here?”

I wonder if he really is planning on a Chargers tryout, or is that just idle talk from the NBA star?

During the promotion Artest was wearing a black Kobe Bryant jersey as a tribute to his new teammate.

Artest spoke of his close friendship with Bryant. He said he had a competitive, but close friendship with Bryant.

David Andersen has big shoes to fill for Houston Rockets

August 18, 2009

Australian basketball player David Andersenphoto by José Porras

I had not been really following NBA news recently. With the season fast approaching I started getting back into the swing of things. Unfortunately I just discovered that Yao Ming is going to miss all of the 2009-10 NBA season due to a stress fracture in his foot. He underwent surgery in July.

It is not all bad news for me as a Houston Rockets fan as David Andersen from Australia will be the replacement at centre for Houston.

Andersen had the Rockets acquire the rights to him in a trade with Atlanta on July 14 after news came through about Yao’s injury. They later announced that they were signing the Australian Olympian to a 2 year contract with a 3rd year option.

Andersen was picked up by the Hawks way back in 2002 when drafted as the 37th pick. He has played mostly in Europe and Australia with his most recent team being FC Barcelona in the Spanish League. He averaged 11.1 points and 4.1 rebounds last season. Before that he played for CSKA Moscow. Andersen started his pro-basketball career in 1998/99 with the Wollongong Hawks in the Australian NBL before moving to Virtus Bologna in 1999.

He has had a successful career winning two Italian nation championships with Bologna and another with Sienna. He also picked up four Russian titles playing for CSKA Moscow and one Spanish title with Barcelona. He also has won three Euroleague titles and was named to the All-Euroleague first team in 2005.

Let’s hope some of that success can rub off on his Houston Rocket team mates as they chase the NBA championship.
