Big Names Tumble in Ladies Wimbledon Championships
In years gone by seeing the names of Venus and Serena Williams in the losers column at Wimbledon after the fourth round would be a big upset. This year we have seen both Williams sisters knocked out before the quarters.
For Serena it was a big moment for her to even by competing at the Championships after overcoming life threatening blot clots. The last time she played in a tournament was a year ago when she claimed the Wimbledon title.
Venus also had missed a lot of tennis this year after injury kept her away from the game.
Serena put up a good fight before losing 6-3, 7-6(8) to the player that Venus defeated in the 2007 Wimbledon final, Marion Bartoli.
For Venus she was easily beaten by Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 6-3. It was the identical scoreline from the match last year when Pironkova knocked Venus out of Wimbledon at the quarter-final stage.
The other big name to fall in the fourth round was world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. She was cruising after the first set winning 6-1. From there her opponent Dominika Cibulkova turned things around and took the match 1-6, 7-6(7), 7-5.
For Wozniacki she continues to be a no. 1 without a grand slam title to her name.
The 2004 winner, Maria Sharapova had no problem advancing to the quarter-finals as she defeated China’s Peng Shuai 6-4, 6-2.
We now look forward to the ladies quarter-finals that will be played on Tuesday. The lineup is:
Dominika Cibulkova (24) v Maria Sharapova (5)
Sabine Lisicki v Marion Bartoli (9)
Tamira Paszek v Victoria Azarenka (4)
Petra Kvitova (8) v Tsvetana Pironkova (32)
Will Sharapova come through and win another Wimbledon title or will we see a brand new ladies champion? Leave your comments below.
