Best of the best in women’s tennis fight it out in Doha

The season ending Sony Ericsson Championships for women’s tennis are currently underway in Doha. The top eight players from the 2008 season are split into two groups of four and play a round robin. The white group includes world no. 1 Jelena Jankovic, no. 4 Ana Ivanovic, no. 7 Svetlana Kuznetsova and no. 9 ranked Vera Zvonareva.
The Maroon group has no. 2 Dinara Safina, no. 3 Serena Williams, no. 5 Elena Dementieva and no. 7 Venus Williams.
On the opening day Zvonareva defeated Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-3. Jankovic defeated Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4. Venus defeated Safina 7-5, 6-3.
On the second day in the white group Zvonareva defeated Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4. In the maroon group Venus defeated Elena Dementieva in three sets and Serena defeated Safina in straight sets.
The way it is shaping up, it could be an all-Williams final as the no. 1 player in the white group plays the second player in the maroon group and vice versa. To make that happen, Serena will need to defeat Venus in the match they play on Thursday.
