Bahrain F1 Grand Prix Called Off
The season opening Formula One Grand Prix scheduled for March 13 in Bahrain has been called off due to recent civil unrest. The Australian Grand Prix on March 27 will now open the Formula One drivers championship season.
“We must focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting to a later date,” said crown prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifah.
“After the events of the past week, our nation’s priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united.”
In a statement on the FIA website they supported the postponement. Here is the text from the press release:
“The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile supports the decision of the Bahrain Motor Federation and the Bahrain International Circuit to postpone the scheduled first Grand Prix of the 2011 season due to be held in the Kingdom of Bahrain on March 11-13.”
Testing which was scheduled to be held in Bahrain on 3 March has been cancelled and will now take place in Barcelona on 8-11 March.
