tennis ball and racquetAustralian Summer of Tennis 2010 – It all starts today with the opening match at the Hopman Cup. Australia who are the top seed at the 2010 event take on Romania in the opening tie. The summer of tennis concludes with the Australian Open at the end of the month.

Australia’s Samantha Stosur and Lleyton Hewitt represent Australia as a team for the first time at the Hopman Cup. Stosur is ranked 13th on the WTA tour and Hewitt is ranked 22 on the ATP tour. They are the top seeds for the event.

Their Romanian opponents will be Sorana Cirstea and Victor Hanescu. Cirstea is a rising star at 19 years of age and rose to as high as 23 in the world during 2009. She is currently ranked at 45.  Hanescu is an ATP Tour veteran and spent most of last year inside the world’s top 30, he ended the year at 48. Other countries to take part at the 2010 Hopman Cup are the USA, Great Britain, Spain, Germany and Kazakhstan.

Some big name players participating in the Hopman Cup event include Andy Murray, Elena Dementieva and Tommy Robredo.

Also this week we see the start of the Brisbane International tennis event. All eyes will be on Justine Henin as she makes her return to the women’s circuit after retiring in 2008. Other players taking part in the women’s draw include Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Dokic and Nadia Petrova. In the men’s event the field is lead by Andy Roddick. Radek Stepanek is back as defending champ, others include James Blake, Gael Monfils and Tomas Berdych.

The main draw action starts on Sunday in Brisbane.
