Venus Bundled Out of Australian Open Tennis Armstong Just One Of The Pack Down Under

Australian Open Tennis Day 4 – What the Players Said

Day four saw a big upset with Venus Williams being bounced from the Australian Open. What follows are some selected quotes from some of the players at their after match press conferences.

Venus Williams after her loss to Carla Suarez Navarro -
“Yeah, you know, I think she played some really good tennis. She was super consistent and aggressive and just went for her shots. I think she just played really well.”

Asked if she thought she was too defensive in the third set, here is the answer from Venus…
“Yeah, I wasn’t in control of the points. I definitely noticed that she kept getting the first shot. I was definitely playing defense. I’m definitely used to dictating the points a little bit more. It was kind of a pattern that wasn’t the best for me.”

Here are some replies from the conquerer of Venus, Carla Suarez Navarro after her great win.
Asked about what the win meant to her…
“For me is a very good match. So I feel very good. And now I’m very good, so…”
Asked about her tactics…
“Nothing special in tactics. Just to go on court, to try to be positive, to try to do my best.
In the first set she never thought that she’s going to lose. She was still thinking positive all of the match.”

Suarez Navarro did not have a lot to say. The above comments were translated from Spanish so I am guessing her english is not good.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Ivan Ljubicic in four sets. The first three were decided by tie-breakers.
Tsonga looked to be hampered by injury while playing. Here is what he had to say when asked about this.
“Tonight my back was very stiff. But I won, and I’m happy of that.”
Tsonga was asked about if he considered calling for the trainer…
“No, because I know what I have, and I know I can play with. You know, I tried to do something who don’t hurt me, and that’s it.”
Tsonga went on to say that he does not think the injury will hamper him in future games.
Here is what Tsonga had to say about his form compared with last year when he reached the final at the Australian Open.
“Yeah, I think I play better. I play better. I’m a little bit more confident maybe in my game. And, yeah, I think I’m better.”

Rafael Nadal easily defeated Roko Karanusic 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Here is what he said when asked about his form at the 2009 Aussie Open…
“Yes, I am happy, no? Sure, I played before first round, second round. But, anyway, was a good result today. The other guy play very, I think, irregular. Sometimes play well, sometimes he had some mistakes. So was tough match for get the rhythm.”
Here is Rafa’s answer when asked about whether he thought missing the Shanghai Masters tournament and the Davis Cup has helped his preparation for the Open…
“I don’t know if gonna be good. I think for some aspects can be good. For some other ones, is a little bit worse. Can be good because you didn’t play, you have more time for practice, you have more time for recover mentally from the long season like last year. But at the same time I was more time than the rest outside of competition. So this is a little bit tougher get the rhythm another time.”
