Australian Open Tennis 2011 – Wildcard Playoffs
Below are highlights from the final of the 2011 Australian Open wildcard playoff for women between Jelena Dokic and Olivia Rogowska.
Each year in December the Australian Open wildcard playoffs take place. The mini tournament is played in a round robin format with players advancing into semis and then the final. The prize for the winner is a wildcard into the upcoming Australian Open.
The 2011 Australia Open tennis tournament will be held at Melbourne Park from January 17-30.
The wildcard playoff took place from 14-19 December.
The top seed in the men’s event was Peter Luczak, no. 2 seed was Marinko Matosevic. The tournament was played over five rounds and as it turned out Luczak and Matosevic met each other in the final.
It was Matosevic who came out the winner taking the match in five sets and with that a berth in the 2011 Australian Open tennis tournament.
In the women’s event they put the players into four round robin groups of four players. After three matches the top player in each group advanced to the semifinals. Three of the top seeds including Alicia Molik (1), Sophie Ferguson (2), Jelena Dokic (3), advanced to the semis. Olivia Rogowska (5) who was runner up last year advanced at the expense of no. 4 seed Jessica Moore.
In the semis we saw Alicia Molik face off against Jelena Dokic and Rogowska v Ferguson. Dokic easily accounted for Molik 6-3, 6-1 and Rogowska defeated Ferguson 7-6(4), 6-4.
In the final Dokic came out looking as though she was going to claim her third Australian Open tennis wildcard playoff crown, taking the first set 6-1. Rogowska did not let that get the better of her and she slowly came back and won the second set in a tie-break. She then continued to keep her nose in front and took the match 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-3. She of course now will take part in the main draw at the Australian Open in 2011.
