Arsenal hit back to defeat Chelsea 2-1

A goal scoring double in the space of three minutes by Arsenal’s Robin van Persie has seen his side come from behind to claim a much needed win in the English Premier League.

Chelsea had taken the lead after 30 minutes when an own goal by Johan Djourou went in. Djourou failed to deal with a dangerous cross from Chelsea when just six yards from goal.

The stats were not on Arsenal’s side as Chelsea had not conceded a second-half all season, but this did not stop the Gunners from staging a much needed comeback.

The match was not without controversy as the first van Persie goal came after he appeared to be in an offside position before receiving the ball and firing home in the 59th minute.

The second from van Persie caught Chelsea by surprise. He appeared to be well covered with his back to goal before getting off a shot that went through the legs of Frank Lampard and beyond Cech the Chelsea goalkeeper.

The win has lifted Arsenal back into fourth spot on 26 points, two behind third placed Man Utd and seven behind the joint leaders, Chelsea and Liverpool. In a Monday game Liverpool has the chance to go top of the ladder with a win or draw against West Ham.

In other results from the weekend Man Utd defeated cross city rival Manchester City 1-0. A goal to Wayne Rooney was enough to secure the points. It was Rooney’s 100th goal in club football. The Red Devils were forced to play the last half of the second period without Cristiano Ronaldo after he received his second yellow for a deliberate hand-ball in the box.

Other results – Aston Villa 0-0 Fulham, Middlesbrough 0-0 Newcastle United, Stoke City 1-1 Hull City, Sunderland 1-4 Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic 2-1 WBA, Portsmouth 3-2 Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Everton.
