American NFL season has kicked off for 2008-2009

I love the September weekend that has just passed. It is when the US Open tennis finals are played and the same weekend signals the start of the American football season, better known as the NFL season.

As an Australian I first remember seeing the NFL way back in the 80′s. We would get a highlights package each week and then the Superbowl would be shown live. I always enjoyed this as it coincided with our Australia Day holiday so I got to watch the match on the Monday morning Australian time.

I have fond memories of the many Superbowl’s I have watched over the years. The 1991 stands out for me. I had competed in a beach volleyball tournament at Coolangatta in Australia. Quite a few of the competitors were from the USA so we had a superbowl party on the next day. The atmosphere was great and the two teams from New York state turned it on. Who can forget Scott Norwood’s last minute field goal attempt that would have snatched the game for Buffalo. As it was the Giants ran out winners 20-19. Poor old Buffalo were in four super bowls in this era and could not pull off a win.

Now the new season in underway. Already we have seen a season ending injury to New England’s Tom Brady. Without there star quarterback just how will the Patriots fare this season. They were almost perfect last season and fell at the final hurdle to the Giants.

It will be an interesting season. Who is your pick for the Super Bowl? Leave your thoughts below.
