tennis ball on tennis racquetThe 2011 Australian Open is scheduled for January 17-30. The Australian Open is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments. Tickets for the 2011 Australian Open tennis are now on-sale from Ticketek.

Tennis fans can purchase ground pass tickets which start at $29 for adults for the 17-26 January period or $19 for 27-30 January, 2011.

There is a family ground pass for the entire duration of the tournament that sells for $75. A family is classed as two adults and two children or one adult and three children.

Tennis fans can also purchase a 5 day non consecutive ground pass for $99.00

Rod Laver Arena single session tickets start at $64.90 for the first round day session and are the same price for night sessions. A concession ticket costs $59.90. Prices rise to $74.90 for round 2, $104.90 for round 3 on Friday but then on Saturday 22 January you pay $119.90.

A quarterfinals ticket will set you back $129.90, semifinals cost $179.90 for the day session on Thursday 27 January, while the night session is $199.90. The Friday 28 January twilight session costs $199.90.

The cost of a finals ticket is $289.90. Both finals are played as twilight sessions.

HiSense Arena tickets are $49.90 for all sessions. A family tickets is $149.90.

Having been to many Australian Open tennis tournaments I recommend the ground pass tickets in the first week. That way you get to see many of the top players, quite often from the front row. You also save a heap of money. The only draw back is that you do not have a reserved seat, but if you are a true tennis fan you will line up early and grab and great seat and stick to it all day. Maybe take a friend so that you can at least take a toilet break. The friend can hold your seat.

The Australian Open tennis tournament was in decline before being revived in 1988 with a shift to a world class, purpose built tennis centre at Flinders Park, now named Melbourne Park. They have been held there ever since.  The courts were initially made of Rebound Ace but later switched to Plexicushion Prestige.

Since the first Australian Open Tennis Championships were held in 1905, the tournament arena was held on  grass  through 1987.  In 1988, the tournament started being played on the Rebound Ace, an especially constructed  hard court .

Mats Wilander, who won in 1983-4 and 1988, is the only male player who has won the Australian Open both on grass and on hard court. His grass court victories came at Kooyong Tennis Centre in Melbourne. A primitive venue when compared with Melbourne Park.

Aside from the actual competition, the Australian Open has become a  main tourist attraction  in Melbourne, bringing in an overwhelming attendance of international guests and parties each year. Attending the tennis gives you a lot more than watching tennis. At the Australian Open they have a lot of other entertainment options throughout the fortnight.

The Australian Open has got a reputation for its weather. It can hit the 40′s and make the courts unplayable. An extreme weather policy is now in place to allow players to leave the courts in extreme heat.
