Hamilton wins Chinese Grand Prix

October 19, 2008

McLaren f1 car

Lewis Hamilton has edged closer to claiming the 2008 f1 drivers championship. He has gone from pole position in the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai to win comfortably from his closest title contender Felipe Massa. The winning margin was 14.9 seconds. 2007 f1 champion Kimi Raikkonen was third and Fernando Alonso in fourth.

The results from the Chinese Grand Prix leave Hamilton 7 points ahead of Massa going into the final race of the season to be held in Brazil in two weeks time. The 7 point advantage is the same as Hamilton took into the final race last season. On that occasion Raikkonen beat both Alonso and Hamilton to the title.

For Massa you could not think of a better situation. He will be racing for the championship in his home grand prix. If he wins and Hamilton is 7th or worse he could repeat last years win dramatic ending by Raikkonen to win the drivers championship for Ferrari. The odds are once again with Hamilton, you would hope he has learnt from last year.

The 2nd and 3rd placings for the Ferrari drivers in the Chinese Grand Prix sees the team take an 11-point lead into the final race as they try to wrap up the constructors’ championship.

Who is your tip to win the drivers championship for 2008 in formula one?

Can Hamilton claim the F1 championship in Shanghai?

October 19, 2008

Lewis Hamilton f1 driverLast year in the formula 1 driver’s championship with just two races left Lewis Hamilton held a commanding 17 point lead. Many expected the Brit would win the championship from such a position. As it panned out Kimi Raikkonen made a storming finish to end the season with two victories and snatched the crown from the hands of Hamilton

In 2008 Hamilton once again leads the drivers championship with just two races to complete in the season. This time he has a five point advantage over Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and a 12 point lead over BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica. The championship is up for grabs for those drivers.

Like in 2007 Hamilton has claimed pole position for the Chinese grand prix. Last year the weather played a part in the race. Perhaps when he should have pitted and changed tires McLaren elected to leave him out on the track. When he finally was heading to the pits his tires were so worn that he spun off into a gravel trap.

Hamilton will be looking to learn from that experience last year. He just needs to claim six points more than Massa to wrap up the 2008 drivers championship. That means his target in China is third place if Massa is out of the points. Hamilton knows what has to be done and he believes he is stronger after having gone through the drama’s of last season. You have to remember it was his rookie season in 2008.

As it turned out both top ranked players were beaten by their opponents. Murray overcame his conquerer in the US Open final, Roger Federer. The score was 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. In the head-to-head matchup between Murray and Simon they are currently 1-1. Both previous meetings took place on clay.

Simon is also fighting for his place in the Tennis Masters Cup to be held in Shanghai. He is currently in 9th spot and his good showing in Madrid could see him push into the top eight. Murray has already qualified.

Australia too good against Qatar in World Cup qualifier

October 15, 2008

The Australian Socceroos team has cruised to a win over Qatar in their second match in the fourth stage of Asian zone qualifying.  The match was delayed for half an hour after a torrential downpour in Brisbane.

football players soccer playersThe rain nor Qatar could stop the Australians. Tim Cahill opened the scoring after a cross from the right was headed across to Josh Kennedy, he in turn flicked another header across to an unmarked Cahill. The Everton player made no mistake as he shot with accuracy into the bottom right of the goal. 1-0 to Australia after nine minutes.

The second goal for Australia came via a penalty which was converted by Brett Emerton in the 17th minute. The penalty was awarded after Cahill was shoved in the back as he attempted a shot from close range. Emerton shot to the right of the keeper from Qatar. Abdulaziz Abdulla managed to get a hand to the ball but only deflected it into the side netting.

After dominating the first 25 minutes of the match Australia eased off. The visiting Qatar team started to get more possession and managed to fire off a few shots. Only one made Mark Schwarzer do some work. The halftime break came with Australia leading 2-0.

The second half was an even affair apart from on the scoreboard. Josh Kennedy setup another goal when he fed Emerton on the right. From about a 45 degree angle the Australian no. 7 shot to the right of the outstretched keeper. The keeper got his fingertips to the ball only to see the shot go in off the lefthand upright. 3-0 after 59 minutes.

Another goal was to come for the Australians who were now cruising to a win. This time it was Josh Kennedy who beat the advancing goalkeeper to head home in the 76th minute. This was a well deserved goal for the towering Australian. Kennedy was later named man of the match.

The win for Australia sees them take full points from the first two matches in this stage. It is also the third win for the Australians over Qatar in the 2010 World Cup qualifying. The first match was a 3-0 win for Australia at home and then the away match saw an Emerton double helf Australia take a 3-1 win.

In the other match in group 1, Japan took on Uzbekistan at home. Maksim Shatshikh gave the visitors the lead after 27 minutes. Japan hit back through Keiji Tamada after 40 minutes. 1-1 was how the match ended.

Australia now sits at the top on group 1 with 6 points from two matches. Japan is second on 4 points from 2 matches played. Qatar is third, also with 4 points. They have played three matches.

Australia’s next match is away against Bahrain on 19 November.

Alonso wins second straight f1 grand prix

October 12, 2008

f1 grand prix carRenault’s Fernando Alonso has won his second straight formula one grand prix after taking the chequered flag in the Japanese grand prix. The win comes after he won the historic night Singapore grand prix last round.

The championship race got a bit more interesting as Massa gained ground on points leader Hamilton. It was only one point following an eigth place result, but it edges the Ferrari driver to six behind the McLaren driver. Hamilton was out of the points in 12th spot.

Robert Kubica who took second place in the grand prix is still a chance to win the drivers championship as he is now 12 points adrift with two races to go. Raikkonen took third place in his Ferrari. The points won by the two Ferrari drivers sees the team take top spot in the constructors race. They lead with 140 to McLaren’s 135.

The Japanese grand prix was one to forget for Hamilton as he lost places at the start and then spun his car to drop way back in the field. It was pretty much over from that point.  To make matter worse Hamilton was given a drive-through penalty on lap 17 for forcing another car from the track.

Massa was also given a drive-through penalty for an incident with Hamilton. After Massa and Hamilton took their drive-through penaltys they were in 14 and 15th respectively.

Massa was to later be involved with an incident with Bourdais and is under investigation.

The end of the day sees a good result for the former champion Alonso. The next race will be next weekend at the Chinese grand prix to be held in Shanghai.

The drivers championship race has come down to three drivers with Hamilton, Massa and Kubica chasing the title. Hamilton is out in front on 84, Massa 78 and Kubica 72.

October 10, 2008

Check out this adidas basketball shoe commercial. They put together quite a cast of players. Some of the dunks are also pretty awesome. I wonder how much of it was scripted, and how much was just some super athletes doing their thing?

The NBA is now in pre-season. Some of the exibition games have been played and the season proper tips off on Tuesday Octoboer 28 with three games.

The NBA right now is taking the game to Europe with what they call the NBA Europe Live Tour. Four matches will be played as part of this tour. The first one was played on Thursday night in Paris where the New Jersey Nets got past Miami in overtime. The other matches will follow in London, Berlin and Barcelona. The New Orleans Hornets and Washington Wizards are playing in the last two cities.

Manly thump Storm to win 2008 NRL title

October 5, 2008

Manly were looking to make amends for last season’s grand final loss as they took on reigning premiers Melbourne Storm in the 2008 NRL grand final.

Manly not only defeated the storm they thumped them recording a record winning margin for a grand final.
The final score was 40-0 which eclipsed the 1975 38-0 margin when Eastern Suburbs defeated St George.

Manly stalwart Steve Menzies was given his fairytale farewell as he scored a try in his final match in Manly colours. The same could not be said for Matt Geyer who was on the losing side. He is also saying goodbye to the NRL.

The match was still close going into the halftime break with Manly ahead 8-0. Two tries were scored in the first half. Matt Ballin crossed in the 24th minute and Michael Robertson after 34 minutes. This was the first of three tries for Robertson. The Storm could have come back from that scoreline if Manly faultered. There was no sign of surrender as Manly stormed to a huge win scoring six tries in the second half.

All is now forgotten for Manly when it comes to the 2007 grand final loss as the Sea Eagles are now the 2008 NRL champions.

Brent Kite was awarded the Churchill medal for best on ground.
