Liverpool moves closer to Champions League spot for next season
April 27, 2008
Following a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City, Liverpool has all but secured fourth place on the English Premier League ladder. The point gained from the draw moves Liverpool 9 points clear of their cross town rivals, Everton. With a vastly superior goal difference you would have to think Liverpool are safe.
The top two teams in the English Premier League receive a spot in the group stage of the Champions League, while third and fourth go into the qualifying stage.
Liverpool came from two goals down in the match against Birmingham. Goals came to Birmingham’s Mikael Forssell in the 33rd minute and Sebastian Larsson after 54 minutes. Peter Crouch got Liverpool back into the match with a goal in the 63rd minute.
Liverpool grabbed the draw following an own goal by Radhi Jaidi.
Liverpool now looks forward to the second leg match of the Champions League semifinal against Chelsea to be played next Wednesday. Liverpool need to score at Chelsea’s home ground to have any chance of advancing to the final in Moscow in May.
English Premier League Chelsea and Manchester United all square
April 27, 2008
The top two teams in the English Premier League, Manchested United and Chelsea faced each other today. Going into the match Man United held a 3 point lead over their London rivals in the race for the title.
Following a 2-1 victory over Manchester United, Chelsea are now level on points with Manchester United. The top spot is held by Man U due to a superior goal difference.
Chelsea have been in red hot form lately with 5 wins and a draw in their last six matches. This compares with Man U who have 3 wins, 2 draws and the loss to Chelsea.
In this game it was Chelsea’s Michael Ballack that was the difference. The German international scored two goals. The crucial one came in the 86th minute when he blasted home a penalty. Ballack had scored his first goal with a well placed header before Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney levelled the scores.
With two matches left for both teams the championship race is set to go down to the wire.
Manchester United play West Ham United and Wigan Athletic in their final two matches, while Chelsea will face Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers.
Mathematically Arsenal could still win the title however it is most unlikely. They would need to win their remaining 3 games and hope Manchester United and Chelsea both lost their final two games.
76ers no easy beats for Pistons
April 26, 2008
Going into the NBA finals series against the Sixers many would have fancied the Detroit Pistons to advance. The Sixers have so far showed that this is not a given.
After taking a shock 1-0 lead in the series after game one the Pistons looked like they were back on track with a game 2 victory.
Game 3 was played today and the Sixers shocked the Pistons once again, this time running up a 20 point win. The final score was 95-75.
Detroit could only shoot at 22 per cent from the field in the second half. That is just not going to get it done in the NBA finals.
The series moves to Philadelphia for game four on Sunday. If the Pistons do not turn things around in that match it could see them take an early exit from the NBA finals in 2008.
Bogut to get big Bucks from Bucks?
April 26, 2008
I was reading an article at wwos.ninemsn.com.au about Andrew Bogut and how he is likely to receive a contract extension with the NBA club Milwaukee Bucks.
The article says he is likely to receive $US6.3 million next season and on top of this he could sign and extension for a further 5 years for around $60-70 USD.
You can read the full article About Andrew Bogut.
Bogut will be playing for the Australian Boomers team in the Beijing Olympics. He will link up with the team in July before taking part on the Olympics in August.
Bogut was the no.1 draft pick in 2005 for the NBA.
Dragons finally breathing fire to down Roosters
April 26, 2008
The St George Illawarra rugby league team have not set the world on fire at the start of the 2008 NRL season. They have only managed 2 points from their first 6 games.
On the other hand the Roosters have started the season showing good form early in the season. They have notched up a win over the 2007 premiers. Not long ago they were sitting at the top of the ladder.
Last week this ended as they lost a match to the Newcastle Knights. On this special ANZAC Day match the Sydney City Roosters were expected to bounce back and continue the bad run for the Dragons.
It did not work out this way and it was the Dragons who looked the better team early on. After 7 minutes the Dragrons had built a 12-0 lead. The Roosters got it back to 12-6 after Anthony Tupou scored a good try.
Unfortunately for Roosters fans this would be the last time they scored in the match. In the end the Dragons ran out winners 26-6.
It goes to show you that form can change in a matter of weeks. The Roosters now need to pick things up for their next clash or they will drift down the ladder.
In the other game played on ANZAC Day the horror start for the Rabbitohs continued after they went down to the Brisbane Broncos 32-18. The Rabbitohs had closed the score to 26-18 with six minutes left on the clock. The Broncos stretched the lead right on fulltime when Joel Moon crossed for a try.
Video of Olympic Torch Relay - Canberra
April 25, 2008
Here is a video I shot of the Olympic Torch Relay in Canberra. It shows Young Australian of the Year for 2007, Tania Major. She had the honor of being the first torch bearer for the Australian leg of the torch relay.
As we know the torch relay was swamped by at least 10 000 Chinese students who were out to show their support for the torch. This mainly came about due to what they see as one sided reporting about the situation in Tibet.
Houston Rockets get a win
April 25, 2008
The Houston Rockets could not win in two home games to start their NBA playoff series against the Utah Jazz. The situation would have been dire if they went to Utah and lost the next game to go down 3-0.
In what is one of the toughest venues to win away from home the Houston Rockets have breathed some life into their playoff dreams. On the back of 27 points from Tracy McGrady, Houston snuck past the Jazz 94-92.
The Rockets came home strong with a 24-16 advantage in the final quarter. The match could have snatched by Utah with 3 seconds to play however Carl Landry came up with a blocked shot to deny Utah this opportunity.
Houston were strengthened today by the return of Rafer Alston who contributed with 20 points and 5 assists.
The next game is in Utah on Saturday.
Canberra Olympic Torch Relay Hijacked by Chinese
April 25, 2008
April 24 saw the Olympic Torch Relay hit the streets of Canberra, Australia.
Pictured at left is Tania Major who had the honor of being the first torchbearer to carry the sacred flame.
I was on hand at Reconciliation Place in Canberra to witness the event.
It was an interesting day. As a long time Olympic fan I was excited to see the flame in Canberra.
On my arrival at the torch relay ceremony I was greeted by a sea of red. Many thousands of Chinese students had been bussed into the Nations Capital to show their support for the torch relay.
This was disappointing in a way as it made it harder to witness the event however it also added to the atmosphere so overall I saw it as a positive.
My daughter and my wife enjoyed the occasion however many of Canberra’s residents did not agree. Some said they were shocked by the behavior of the Chinese students as the flame moved around the city. The students surged to the security fencing and shoved aside the locals.
In my experience I did not see this. Most of the Chinese were well behaved and I never felt I was in a situation where my 6 year old daughter was in danger of being trampled or was pushed aside by the crowd.
Overall the day has been hailed a success. I would agree with this. It showed the Olympic spirit is as alive and well in Australia and the onlookers were easily able to view the torch as it moved along the Canberra streets.
What people think of the Chinese invasion differs. Some see it as thousands of people having been brainwashed by the leaders of their country. I see it as people being proud of their country and just wanting to display this love of the country they hail from.
I look forward to August 2008 when I will be in Beijing for the Olympics.
The Olympic Flame Arrives in Canberra
April 23, 2008
Today at just before 8.00am the Olympic flame touched down in Canberra, Australia.
Tonight there was a function held at Australia’s Parliament House to welcome the flame to Canberra. The function was hosted by the Chinese Embassy. I was lucky enough to be invited.
Many of the Australian Olympic swim team were on hand as well as greats from days gone by. Ian Thorpe, Rob De Castella, Petria Thomas to name a few were in attendance.
It now remains to be seen just what will happen tomorrow as the torch makes its way around the streets of Canberra. The torch relay will commence at 8.45am and will wind up around lunchtime.
Tania Major has the honour of being the first torchbearer for the Canberra leg. Ian Thorpe will be the last torchbearer to carry the torch. He will also light the cauldron at Commonwealth Park before the farewell concert.
